Back on August 10 I mentioned that David Castello was told GoDaddy would be rolling out a new appraisal system. It now looks like it’s rolling out. David posted on X that now their domain name Cost.com is appraised over $1M.
Longtime commenter here John posted that GoDaddy should not even be in the business of appraisals. I think many agree with his opinion. He wrote:
Yes, it’s beyond stupid and beyond shortsighted. Also, goes without saying, an appalling abomination.
So so stupid.
Just felt like checking out TheDomains tonight and glad I did. Literally just recently encountered what GoDaddy is doing for the “appraisal” of some of my best domains – so insane. Incredibly ignorant and uninformed too, unless simply straight up lying, which these days is certainly a main primary possibility too.
To recap – I started in “domaining” about 25 years ago but over time became 99.9% end user/buyer, which is where I am now. But I like to check domain news and the major blogs and comment in them. I would also still be interested in selling a few, but only for an honest price.
GoDaddy should stop it, so should Dynadot, and every other registrar doing it. But of course we know it’s 99.9 x 99.9% certain most or all will only double down and never do that.
It has been harmful and destructive, and while they may think it has helped their own interests – just as Esau sold his birthright for a meal – that is shallow, shortsighted and mistaken.
It’s tempting to tell you a great secret about how one can sometimes exploit and benefit despite this appalling and abominable status quo they themselves have imposed, however, including also the likes of Estibot, but perhaps another time.
So much harm to everyone around, including themselves but especially small business owners and investors – especially everyone else. Both Jacob pre-transformation, and Esau.
