Highest Sign In Times Square Goes With A .Tv For Advertising 7TS.TV

June 16, 2013 by Michael Berkens

7TS_WEB-IMG_01

If you happen to be wandering in New York’s Time Square be sure to check out the highest sign which is available for rent, they are using a .TV domain name to promote it:

7ts

(thanks to Stu Maloff for the picture of the sign)

The LED sign which bills its self as Top of The Square official site is 7TS.tv which stand for the property’s address of 7 Times Square.

Here is what the site says about the sign:

“”The 7TS sign is positioned behind the famous Times Square Ball Drop and is viewed by an estimated 1 billion viewers worldwide on New Year’s Eve alone. ”

“Become a part of a New York Tradition.”

For the record the company does not own the domain name 7TS.com which is available for sale and seem perfectly happy giving the .TV domain exposure to millions of people a week.

The .COM has a sales listing of $3,288. Maybe that’s just way too much, and the eventual goal is to do a UDRP… (yes, I know)… although they could have an advertising deal with .TV as well, since simply having it as an extension gives it a lot of exposure.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how fast its PageRank goes up, (currently 0/10), or its Alexa ranking changes. (Currently unranked.) Weird name, though.

that is one ridiculously bad domain name… it will help cement madison avenues reputation as completely clueless.

$3,288 is probably “too much” compared to a freshly registered reg-fee .TV yes…. although they are advertising in times square so i kinda doubt that was even a consideration. it could have been they just checked the .COM availability and when it wasnt available just immediately went for the .TV like it didnt matter..

it really depends on their perception and this is the key point domainers do not control.. perception IS starting to change a little bit on website addresses.. people that disagree are being stubborn or have had their eyes closed the last 10 years. not everyones perception of these things will change all at once to call using random .anything domains the absolute right or wrong move at any given point in time.

more and more people will view website addressees as a blank piece of paper.. or a blank business card.

would you like the regular blank $3 business card or do you want this nice eggshell textured embossed, raised lettering card – its totally worth the extra $3,270. some people will be sold on the $3 card and some people will take the upsell.

    @RaTHeaD

uh huh, keep quoting those domainer sound bites. maybe click your heels together 3 times so the rest of the world now lives in your reality too.

I just think the name as a whole, even as a .COM, is not the greatest. Say it out loud. “7TS.TV”. If you hear someone say that, do you hear “SeventyS.TV”? Anytime you have a name that can even be somewhat confusing, it’s not a good thing.

That said, it looks like the site is really geared only towards potential advertisers… the general public will likely care less about it, especially since the site in its present state, is pretty boring.

Sometimes .com domains have been compared with things like “a billboard on Times Square”. If you already have an actual real life billboard in the aforementioned location one probably does not need to pay much for a domain.
Not sure how many tourists on the ground there will see it, certainly I remember when I was there it was hard enough to avoid either getting squashed on the road or bumping into some other dazed and confused visitor. Tons more people see the spot on TV than live and thats why it fits very well on .tv
Nice spot, like it or not that advertising hoarding when its advertising itself is putting .tv into the faces of millions, including the type of stuffy execs that ‘dont get it’ whether on .com or anywhere else.

“it will help cement madison avenues reputation as completely clueless.”
An unnamed former Madison avenue person with a very decent .com portfolio – that most of us know – going back to 1995 would likely agree.

7TSTV.com – stepped in what – well one thing for sure is – I would not be an investor in that VC.
OR – Probably this encapsulates the risks – and true realities or “Crowd Funding”

Better leave this one for the genius cubicle blog whores – some of which are on this thread 🙂

yeah, cause people commenting here are getting paid by some “higher up.” kinda paranoid and delusional of ya.. or is it just cool to say “cubical whores”

    sounds badass though. anti-establishment even..

Foolish people, should have just gone with any old reg fee .com instead of that.

    Terrible choice of a domain.
Aside this is silly, “Billions won’t see it”none looks at those signs (Alexa Big Fat Zero), been there several times can’t remember a single one… even when you see Big names up there the intention is mainly already establish Brand reinforcment…
Is it Seven? or 7 ? T S? or ST? … I’ll bet the dot tv part will go unnoticed even if someone is entced to type it at home most like will forget that detail…

Mike: you should be covering the NewYork Dot Com re-launch and their Huge Big Media Campaing…
