Google Launches New Product “What Do You Love” Using WDYL.com: Time, Inc. Owns WhatDoYouLove.com & Isn’t Using it

July 12, 2011 by Michael Berkens

In a post on Google’s blog today they rolled out a new product “What Do You Love” and launched WDYL.com as its site.

The exact match domain name for the new Google product,  WhatDoYouLove.com is under brand protection at Mark Monitor and belongs to another client of MarkMonitor, Time, Inc.

However WhatDoYouLove.com seems to be for a dead product of Time, Inc and resolves to a “Page Not Found” on People.com a Time, Inc. product.

The interesting part to me is that both clients use Mark Monitor management and you would think once again that someone over there would know enough if one client was rolling out a product called “What Do You Love” and another client had the exact match domain that they weren’t using, well you get the idea.

For the record this is how Google describes its new product wdyl.com

“””A while back, a few of us wanted to make a little tool that we could use to show just about anybody more of what Google makes. That led to some simple ideas, and then a few more ideas and ultimately, to a challenge: how we could connect people to products they might not know about and may find useful, but make the discovery relevant to them and keep it fun.

Playing about with that challenge produced a website—What Do You Love?—that we hope meets at least some of the challenge by demonstrating how different Google products can show you different things about any particular search query. Like always, you’re the judge, so give it a go. Type in something that you love—polar bears, space travel, pickup trucks, Lady Gaga, early Foghat—whatever strikes your fancy (for some reason, the results for cheese always crack us up, so try that if you’re momentarily stumped). No matter what it is, we’ll give you back something that will let you get even more into what you love.”

    Makes perfect sense.

Popular culture (and popular tech) nowadays loves acronyms — DWTS, SYTYCD etc. etc.

Oh wow – I happen to own WhatDoILove.com. I also have WhatDoILike.com which I thought was the far better of the two, but this may complicate things. 🙂 Thanks for reporting on this MHB!
