Return Of the Typo’s: They are Selling Like Hotcakes On NameJet.com

July 13, 2011 by Michael Berkens

I’ve been noticing a trend that has fairly recent on NameJet.com and its return of active auctions for typo domain names.

With PPC income declining over the last few years typo domain’s have not seen too much action at the drop auction houses,  but just this week these typo domains have sold:

tarrot.com $2,302
emploment.com $2,877
cosmopoliton.com $2,322
vedios.com $1,666
chatroms.com $1,300
horocope.com $1,200
receipies.com $920
receips.com $760
vidieo.com $279
celibrity.com $231
musicvedios.com $210
instantmessager.com $121

And these are still in auction and will closing over the next couple of day’s:

horosope.com $109
mp3dowloads.com $89
musicvedio.com $89
recieps.com $99
vedio.com $230
vitimans.com $191
animie.com $119
astology.com $144
famousqoutes.com $281

Of course those are just the auctions I’m tracking.

So what do you think?

Have you seen an increase in these number of typo domains selling recently and if so is it an indication that things are getting better in PPC land?

    Michael,

About 2 years ago, I was offered, $100,000 for, ForclosedHomes.com, typo for ForeclosedHomes.com. The buyer knew it was a typo, but if you asked 10 people on the street, 5 will spell it like I have it.

    Thanks, JIm

“The buyer knew it was a typo, but if you asked 10 people on the street, 5 will spell it like I have it.”

Google disagrees with you. The correct spelling gets 16x the search volume as the typo.

Personally, I won’t risk nothing more than regfee for a typo and only if it’s a highly searched one.

    @Tony,

Maybe I should of stated when I got the name in 2000, that is how it was, 50% spelled it wrong on the street that I asked, and that includes real estate agents where I worked. With that being said, the name has brought me a great ROI so no complaints. I don’t go after typo’s, but that was one exception, in my 14 years in the domain business.

    Thanks, Jim

IMHO if you are long in a vertical with developed sites, a relevant typo is a easy way to get consistent traffic. I have several typos I paid a few hundred bucks for years ago and they paid for themselves easily. Traffic divided by cost per click (if you use ppc as I do) is a quick pay back number.

Wow, mostly 1999 reg’s and by the looks of it they probably belong to the same company or person.

Looking at those typos reminds me of that guy that got locked up a while back, he had quiet a few typos of that quality as far as I remember …….but I can’t remember the guys name 😉

I doubt its any indication that PPC is getting better…more spring cleaning or cashing in perhaps ?

IMO the demand for typo domains betrays 2 major things:
    1) The increasing number of people whose first language is not english coming online and accessing the english speaking internet.
    2) Declining literacy in some of the world’s leading markets.

One also must wonder at the percentage sales to illiterate/careless domainers or end-users who actually didnt notice they were buying a typo. My guess is that is not zero.

    @ Tony

The implementation of Google’s ‘suggest’ (and the latest rendition termed ‘auto-complete’, a.k.a. ‘query predictions’) likely has inflated the number (16x) reported by Google. I would bet if Google did not ‘suggest/auto-complete’ the search term(s) as they are entered, that the assertion of 50% spelling the term incorrectly is likely not that far off.

Introducing the ‘suggest/auto-complete’ feature no doubt influenced the search volumes of many ‘types’ of keywords. Typos were obviously disadvantaged, but it also influenced the search volumes of single vs. plural versions of keywords, and many believe it has effectively served to promote branded products over the comparable generic product name.

I flipped AppetiteSuppresent dot com at low xx some months ago.

Clths dot com is the one domain earning regular revenue on Whypark.

That’s great Jim Holleran is in the house. I listed Quot.tv no reserve on Cax
    http://www.cax.com/quot.tv

which is actually a latin word, but shortened version of quote . It bothers me to drop that thing, so I hope MHB doesn’t mind if I mention it here! It gets 1600 US exact searches.

They’re pretty good at the singular/plural thing. They’re getting better and better at synonyms, too. Pay attention to the ‘bolded’ stuff in SERP.

You might be searching for “kitchen knives” but see “kitchen knife set” bolded as a relevancy signal, right along exact matching keywords in the domain, title, etc…

Zuccarini was the name I was thinking of, the quality of those typos look as good as some of the ones he lost a while back.
He also had a few really good horoscope, astrology typos but his lawyer apparently dropped alot of his names and they ended up in auction …. eeek

This is nothing like in times gone by where typos domains could sell into 5 figures, sounds like an unusual company drop rather than any change in the marketplace.

“sounds like an unusual company drop rather than any change in the marketplace.”

    @ Snoopy

Correct, some of them like tarrot, chatroms, horocope, horosope, receipies, musicvedio, celibrity, vidieo, astology and others were Zuccarini’s old names.

I just found a list of them on dnforum and they were in it, I thought they looked pretty familiar 😉

Some great typos there if you’re into typos, apparently they were earning him a fair bit at one time.
