Namecheap domain insights & trends report for 2025

January 29, 2026 by Raymond Hackney

Namecheap Trends Report

Namecheap published their domain insights & trends report for 2025. A lot of interesting stats and facts. 147 one-letter and 2,829 two-letter domains, while more than 1 million domains included hyphens registered stood out to me. 1 million domains included hyphens? WOW.

The long-term shift of .com vs other TLDs

In 2025, .com continued to dominate registrations, reaching 4.67 million new domains and slightly increasing its share of total registrations year over year. While .com remains the most recognized extension, its share of the market has gradually declined over the past five years as alternative TLDs gained broader acceptance.

  • 2020: 48% .com vs 52% non-dot-com
  • 2021: 45% .com vs 55% non-dot-com
  • 2022: 43.8% .com vs 56.2% non-dot-com
  • 2023: 39.9% .com vs 60.1% non-dot-com
  • 2024: 38.7% .com vs 61.3% non-dot-com
  • 2025: 40.1% .com vs 59.9% non-dot-com

The data points to a market balancing familiarity with flexibility, as businesses weigh trust against differentiation.
