As we enter Q4, 2020 domain name sales are way off 2019’s pace

October 2, 2020 by Raymond Hackney

Domain Name Sales

As we now enter the fourth quarter of 2020, reported domain name sales are way off 2019’s pace. No surprise really with what has been going on in the world, a global pandemic, environmental and economic hardships have made 2020 one of the worst in recent memory.

This is a domain name blog, so we will delve into the numbers so far.

Currently reported domain name sales at Namebio are in the $84.1 million range vs $150.9 million for 2019.

Of course 2019 did have Voice.com and $30 million in just 1 sale. So far not one 7 figure reported sale at Namebio for 2020.

The monthly sales rate reported at Namebio has been in the $8.1 to $9.9 million range.

So total sales reported at Namebio will probably come in at around $108 million to $111 million. More in line with 2018 reported sales. The only difference being the average sale price per domain sold down about 32% in 2020 vs 2018.

Now I look at domain investing from 4 camps

The all around domain investor – will invest in any extension where they see value. someone like Mike Berkens.

The .com only domain investor – someone like Snoopy.

The new gtld only domain investor – someone like Marek Eckhaus.

The CCtld specialist – they focus most of their efforts on one or a few country codes. Frank-Germany in .De – Ammudamus (Ammar) in .tv.

New gtld sales in 2020 reported so far are at $1.8 million vs $3.5 million in 2019.

CCTLD’s have a chance of surpassing 2019 numbers. So far cctld reported sales are at $9.4 million vs $10.5 million in 2019.

In a down year .net has already surpassed reported 2019 sales just 9 months in. .Org should also surpass 2019 reported sales numbers.

Note: There are many sales that are unreported each month. We cannot comment on the unknown, so we deal with what’s reported to, and by, reliable sources.

I sold many of the 4L domains at Sedo auction for big bucks, domains that I bought dirt cheap years ago from people that called themselves domain experts/investors…whatever…..now who is laughing all the way to the bank now…

Interesting because there was not a single “big bucks” sale at this auction.

Big bucks is when I get the domains dirt cheap at $15 each years ago and sold for $650…
        That a big ROI….
        easy peasy
This is a kinda of story people like not like some rich A**holes like Bezos or Gates buying 1 word domain….

LoL… sold for “big bucks” is now a few hundred? I get that you got good ROI, but now someone is saying the same thing about you that you’re saying about the people that sold to you those 4Ls.

          Basically, don’t be so cocky.

Yeah, I bought around 30 4L’s back in 2009-2010 for about the same ($15-$40 range on godaddy auctions). Sold about 7 and let the rest drop…regretting that now

Raymond, thanks for this research. When you compare previous years to 2020, do the stats for 2018 and 2019 refer to the entire year or the YTD equivalent of 2020?

      Entire Year Bob.

I agree 650 is chump change with so many businesses going online and brick and morter More and more obsolete ,as online becomes the new norm. Along with this an explosion of jobs that will become internet related. My friend everyone in the know ,knows why that big auction took place,to fleece the little guys out of their great 4ls ,why do you think you sold so many. 4ls that are half way decent and pronounceable will be the new 3ls ,so the other contributor was right whose the real chump here.
