Add.com sells for $800,000 to lead NamesCon Live Auction

January 30, 2020 by Raymond Hackney

NamesCon Live Auction

Add.com stole the show at NamesCon live auction. The name sold for $800,000.

Offices.com sold for $260,000. The two LL.coms did not meet reserve. 74 out of 136 lots sold.

There were no new gtld sales but to be fair there were only a few in the auction.

I was live tweeting and we had a lot of people commenting and asking questions I posed on some names.

Futons.com did not sell at $110,000 most said they would take. Same for $17,000 for ragstoriches.com and $225,000 for Burb.com.

If you see onsite it meant in person, and (L***) was an Internet bidder.

Was surprised by add.com, didn’t think it would sell with a 500k+ reserve.

LL.com has clearly seen large falls, XU.com was passed in at $300k.

    LLL’s took a beating.
Love the HRB at 70k though. I am sure everyone sees Herb all the way.

Printers.info @$8500 – WOW – Printing dying Biz for over 5 years. and a dot info. Really big congrats to seller on this one.

Rides.co only was bid up to 3k kind of amazes me. I am not a co-investor but many domainers have been raving about dot co’s all last year. Rides is an incredible keyword. Surprised some of the co fans didn’t bid it into 5 digits.

Slept.com past tense of sleep did not take the 120k. Amazing.

Asheville.org for 3k. I hope the King or Berkens were able to nab that one since that city means so much to the both of them

Burb.com – seller passed on 225k. Seriously? What am I not seeing on this one?

These next (2) are the best deals of the auction, imo

BeautySpa.com was one of my favs of this auction and such an awesome price at only $5500. Really unbelievable. Will make a beautiful brand for Drew Wash.

TravelAgency.com at $25k was another phenomenal price for an entire Industry!

With regard to the bidding on names not sold, a lot of it is not genuine bidding so don’t read much into that. What someone was really willing to pay was either at that price or lower than that price, depending on the name. Many ended one bid under reserve.

      • Vito says

        January 30, 2020 at 11:06 pm

Good point about not reading much into those bids.
First time I haven’t bid in this auction in years. I actually forgot about the classic, one bid just below reserve.

        January 31, 2020 at 12:13 am

I concur with this, the bidding was setup to goat the next bid, highly dishonest, and I am sure godaddy wants no association with this.

        • Snoopy says

          January 31, 2020 at 12:34 am

Godaddy’s own platform is full of fake bidding.

“BeautySpa.com was one of my favs of this auction and such an awesome price at only $5500. ” Second that.

Everyone needs to wait another year or two for GoDaddy to integrate live auction on their platform and market the auction to their users. This wasn’t done right and it’s the same old crowd we had for a decade or more now with few targeted buyers in between.

    • Snoopy says

      January 30, 2020 at 10:20 pm

It is very unlikely that endusers are going to turn up to domain auctions in significant numbers. Most wholesale markets (ie auctions) have mostly wholesale buyers. Much like cars and antiques it is typically dealers and collectors who show up, not retail buyers.

These auctions are the place to get liquidity, not the place to get a really strong price.

    • Mike says

      January 31, 2020 at 12:15 am

Spas don’t step up like that. To generic for it’s own good to get $10K out of it.

      • Snoopy says

        January 31, 2020 at 12:36 am

Agree, it is a bit like hairdressers, that aren’t paying $50 for a domain. This name has good potential, but it is not going to have a huge pool of buyers. Probably needs someone with a very specific business idea.

I would take $225k for that. It was picked up for $8k in 2016? Over 25x is a good number.

  6. Mark Thorpe says

Directions.com is worth more than $75k. Money should be made off of that domain purchase.

      • Tony says

        January 30, 2020 at 10:21 pm

I agree. It came down to two internet bidders – myself and the high bidder. No one in the room thought it was worth it.

        • Mark Thorpe says

          January 30, 2020 at 10:29 pm

Directions.com is worth mid 6 figures to low/mid 7 figures to the right end-user IMO.

          • Mark Thorpe says

            January 31, 2020 at 9:36 am

@Faith Lectures.com is probably worth low 6 figures to mid 6 figures to the right end-user IMO. Maybe more if you find a deep pocketed buyer.

          • Mike says

            January 31, 2020 at 12:28 pm

If it was worth that much, and in the hands of an experienced domainer like Matt who owns his own parking provider, and user to own namepros, is very savvy tech guy, he must have been out of options to just throw it up in auction for a low reserve? Try to connect the dots, 6-7 figures hardly ever fall out of the sky.

          • Snoopy says

            January 31, 2020 at 11:04 pm

Doubt lectures.com is worth over lowish 5 figures, what would it be used for?

            Directions.com is a great name.

        • Mark Thorpe says

          January 31, 2020 at 9:27 am

@Tony Thanks. Directions.com could be used multiple ways IMO.

    • Snoopy says

      January 30, 2020 at 10:31 pm

I think it a very good name, but TravelAgent.com would be the most logical domain, and travel is so tapped out. Everyone knows Booking.com, Expedia.com, Hotels.com, huge co’s that advertise constantly. I think the chance of being able to compete or the chance of getting enduser interest at a large premium to acquisition cost is low.

This is part of the reason why the GEO’s are doing so poorly in my view, the main revenue source for many is just display a booking.com search box. How exactly can anyone compete by monetising like that?

      • Mark Thorpe says

        January 30, 2020 at 10:39 pm

Can’t go wrong with TravelAgency.com or TravelAgent.com. The travel agent works at the travel agency.
        I actually like TravelAgents.com better than TravelAgent.com.

  7. VP says

    January 31, 2020 at 12:48 am

I’d like to hear more on the perceived value of TravelAgency.com and the possibilities for monetization or development. Underpriced, fair value, overpriced? It seems the consensus is the domain was a very good deal. Given the online travel industry and the giants of that industry, what would be the quickest and easiest way to monetize TravelAgency.com? Looks like the current owner has it parked using their own parking platform, is this even viable monetization anymore? What about forwarding redirect to for an affiliate programs? I wonder what say kayak.com or Expedia.com would pay

  8. Sid says

    January 31, 2020 at 3:24 am

The auction format was brutal, you have a guy in tshirt, and jeans, hustling, and cursing names like he is selling crack
on a street corner. One of the most poorly put on auctions, I have been seen. The domain industry deserves better names that sell thru, and a more exciting platform. Glad snoozefest 2020 is over, time for a new auctioneer.

The lll .com with No Significant meaning have no real market and are just recycled among domainers…

The Premium lll .coms are the ones getting bought for decent money (Like this one)
    The Blue Chip per-se

    • Snoopy says

      January 31, 2020 at 11:21 pm

LLL.com seems to be down around 70% and LL.com down 50-60%.

The ones that are selling well at reseller level are selling well because they are words, ADD.com, DJS.com, (or close to it like HRB.com), not because LLL.com collectors want them. The word value far exceeds the LLL.com element of the name, and so they are still strong.
