An update on Pheenix

November 27, 2019 by Raymond Hackney

JudgeMind started a warning thread on Namepros with regards to domain registrar and former drop catcher Pheenix.

Apparently he was having a hard time getting authcodes and needed one quick because he had a sale and needed to give it to the buyer.

Now, i have sold another name and again i am unable to retrieve transfer auth codes and am getting no support from pheenix. The domain name was sold at afternic almost a week ago, i sent multiple emails to the owner of pheenix and to pheenix support with no resolve. I even hunted down Mr. Tran on Linkedin who informed me he had nothing to do with Pheenix anymore…. So what the heck is going on then? Is the site just running on auto pilot and accumulating issues daily? They have zero support.

I want/need to be able to transfer all of my domains away from pheenix especially the domain I’ve most recently sold via afternic. Now afternic is threatening to cancel the transaction if the authorization code is not supplied to them soon.

At one time Pheenix had an additional 49 registrars as part of their drop catching operation.

Rob Monster got involved to try to help JudgeMind.

Pheenix

Another member who had a credit there for months reported getting their money sent to them via PayPal.

So if you have names or cash at Pheenix take the time to log in and get your credit/codes now as it seems they are being responsive to requests.

I had exact same problems with Network “Solutions” and then solution was to make a report to ICANN with copy to them. It did the trick and auth code arrived quickly.

I also have had recent troubles receiving auth codes from Pheenix. After waiting a month to receive a reply to my support ticket, I was told that emails from Pheenix to my email address were being blocked and to use a different email for my contact info. I have yet to try this as I was forced to renew my domains at Pheenix in order to retain them.

It is interesting to hear that other people are having similar problems. I supposed that was the case. One month to hear back on a support ticket usually means problems.

Customer service should be a primary focus for domain service providers. if they don’t provide good customer service, it harms their business and harms the domain industry’s reputation as well.

Let me share with you another important lesson here. When EnCirca took over the 49 Pheenix Registrars terminated by ICANN, many registrants were upset about the lack of notice and resulting process for gaining control of their domains.

Most of these names were anonymous using a supposed Whois Proxy service. ICANN’s data escrow policy requires that names using proxy services also include the underlying registrant data. But for many of the Pheenix names, this underlying data was not escrowed or otherwise available. Thus, there was no reliable way of notifying registrants of the switch or even determining or validating ownership.

i might suggest biggest issues may be with names at the pheenix sub or captive registrars, especially if they been sold or new owners.

its possible some older names went to encirca?

i was able to do a transfer in one day yesterday, got code, started, got approval.

PHEENIX seems to be in business to go out of business.

There were some allegations of not so friendly bidding policies over there some suggesting bids were being propped up.

    RIP PHEENIX

They were great at first getting some good names on the drop typically at a lower price than if snapnames or namejet got them.I got a lot of great names with them.

Until they figured out how to squeeze everyone in auctions.

I have a dotcom that’s locked at Pheenix because it had been declared sinkhole status and will probably be forced to renew at Pheenix the third time in the next months.

My names at Pheenix were taken over by Encirca a while ago. Many I transfered out were still listed in my Pheenix account.

Make a complaint to Icann. Mr Tran has always been hopeless in my experience.

How do you file a complaint with ICAN for not reimbursing money from pheenix account?

Icann won’t have any say on that. Either do a chargeback on original funding source or keep chasing him.

I sent an email to Tran on Linkedin and namepros, there is no response.
