The good, the bad and the ugly – DAN/Undeveloped 2019 Edition

August 9, 2019 by Raymond Hackney

Back in 2016 we started a series here that looked at the best and worst about companies in the domain industry. Over the last 30 months a lot has changed at many companies so we are revisiting the good, the bad and the ugly.

Each post will deal with just one company, readers are encouraged to share their positive and negative experiences. Suggestions for improvement are also encouraged.

One of the goals of the column is that company representatives will see how their customers think of them. This can lead to a conversation on fixing problems.

What is not allowed:

  • Personal attacks on individuals at the chosen company
  • Promoting a competitor
  • Posting domains for sale

The company in the spotlight today is DAN.com/Undeveloped
Founded: 2014

There is so much good to say about this company. The best-looking sales landers, great interface, and they give you the name and IP address of potential buyers. Support is also good, and now they have amassed many great TrustPilot reviews, which I find very important.

As a VAT registered seller based in the EU, the fact the DAN automatically generates invoices with VAT when applicable is incredibly useful to me. No other marketplace does this to my knowledge.

It’s difficult for me to find bad things to say. I am not too happy about the statement “Get this domain in less than 24 hours” since this is not always the case, especially if dealing with ccTLDs. DAN Being a European operation, support during U.S. working hours could also be better. But really those are minor things. Sedo should watch out!

Why should pay to park our domains on their platforms?
I suggest we asked them to pay us to park our domains , if they want our business, pay us.
Without our domains, they are nothing.

    Good – they accept Bitcoin
Bad – never sold any domains there
    Ugly – misconfigured websites

So far best platform for conversion. I tried efty, domain market sales , undeveloped and my own. I come from digital marketing background and UX and sales friction is very important for me (and so is for domain buyers).
Streamlined landing page, logo that looks as part of business cards, and easy to process sale without needing escrow and monthly payment option makes it a current winner. I did multiple 10k+ sales this year through dan/undeveloped.
One issue I have is they don’t lower their commission on larger domains, and I think it should scale down after a certain price number. 9% across the board is too high if its 20k+ Domain.

    Good

    1) Very professional looking landing pages
    2) Payment plans clearly laid out
    3) Payment plans which can be different for each individual domain name between 1 & 24 months.
    4) Accept Crypto for payments
    5) Bulk upload is the easiest in the biz. It is immediate. No BS. No flaws and that is a HUGE deal for me. Time is money. Ive had issues uploading to every other Marketplace I have ever been involved with. When you dont want to email back n forth w support for days because some domains did not upload in your bulk upload, thes guys have it down pat.
    6) 9% is one of the cheapest commisions for any marketplace in our biz
    7) They listen to our Suggestions to make it better. Ive had a few conversations with owner, and believe me they are not resting and are making it better daily
    8) Payouts for sales are very fast
    9) Bring your own lead and its only 5% commission
    10) Just loaded a few hundred domains and had (2 sales right away. (1) was a BIN. (1) was a (12) month payment plan.

    The Bad

I know its hard to believe but i dont see any bad now. I guess the only complaint i have right now is an emoji domain issue but they are fixing that. They are making emoji domains searchable by the actual emoji itself in the search bar and not that ugly xn--etc

    The Ugly

I know DAN.com is a beautiful, short domain name but call me crazy, i still like Undeveloped much better for the Services they offer.

I don’t generally use an kind of platform but decided to give DAN a go just yesterday with a small selection of names.

Good – the landers are simple. Less is more
The sales process is spelled out in detail

Bad – it took me a while to get registered. I still don’t get the magazine thing and why should I select three subjects that interest me? Why does that even happen?

Ugly – nothing. It’s great looking!

The delay and slow response time for support requests since I’m in the U.S. has been annoying. Started off pretty slow over the first 6 months but I’ve completed a sale recently and gotten a couple of other good inquiries as well.
