Who got a deal and who overpaid at the NamesCon live auction?

January 31, 2019 by Raymond Hackney 39 Comments

Now that there has been a bit of time to digest the sales data from the NamesCon live auction, what names did you think were a bargain and which did you think the buyer overpaid?

I think Stop.com was probably the best buy along with SmartDrugs.com. I think stop is very versatile and smart drugs is the future. ShoeRack.com for $6,000 is a good buy imo.

I think the seller did really well to get $70,000 for MyWebsite.com.

Not sure there is many good deals there, stop.com sounds a million dollars but it is a very negative, what business is really going to use this term? 90% of the time they’ll move onto something else which is why it went for $110k in my view and not the 500k and similar “not negative sounding” name might get..

Solvent.com sounds decent. SmartDrugs.com is going to date and is basically a tech term. Who are the obvious endusers and why would it be called “smart drugs” in 20 years?

I think Stop is the best possible term for anything that is negative that you would like to put a stop to…
negativity, bullying, smoking, addictions, racism, sexual violence, discrimination, etc.

For anything negative I would much rather have the .org. I would even say that the .org is worth more in this case.

The .org is never worth more, a charity will not pay hundreds of thousands for this name.

If the .org were auctioned at the same venue it would get a couple of thousand max, maybe not even $1,000.

A room full of domain pros, a online room full of domain pros. Domain has been shopped around for a few months now, so why did the bidding stop, it wasn’t like stupid money wasn’t being thrown around CannabisCompany.com for $12K lol

Give it a couple more years and it will be selling for $3,000. No demand for domains like this beyond domainers, growing supply of similar names.

All the non .com’s were probably a waste of money.
Most of the .com’s were fair deals.
I personally went $200 above my max and got caught up in the bidding so I’m not proud of that.
Domainnames.com was greatly overvalued. By comparison, what would domain/s.com go for? $5 million? $10 million?
Dieticians is a misspelling of dietitians. Look it up. I would’ve paid $4K for the real thing.

They must have been desperate and really hurting for money. Top names went for really cheap prices. I bet Rick Schwartz would have gotten 2 million dollars for STOP.COM

If Web.com sat on DomainNames.com for so many years, and decided to auction it off so it could be bought by the compeition, Uniregistry which is already in the business, what more can someone do with it other than capture the traffic leads it brings. It is a perfect domain for Uniregistry which has millions of domains under their belt for sale. Chump change for them given some of the sales they recently closed.

    1. Huge surprising *steals* of the decade:

    Insurance.us
    SmartDrugs.com

    2. Good deal:

    DomainNames.com

    3. Abomination:

The Estibot “appraisal” figure having to appear with each listing to poison the mind of the real world market, while most people take it silently as if the emperor is not walking around naked at their own expense.

It will be interesting to see how many domain names are bought by *end users* for real development. Sometimes, end users bought as a defensive tactic to stop competitors from using it.

Huge keyword. Useless extension. Won’t get any type in traffic. Won’t help get ranked on search engines. Most likely future buyers will be other domainers thinking they can resell for higher which is hit or miss with 1000 gtld to choose from.

Agree, reminds me a lot of flowers.mobi. Great keyword, terrible extension.

When something sells low at auction the usual reason is because it is a bad domain and it will likely sell for lower next time. It is likely to come back to auction because the new buyers won’t get enduser leads just like the last owner. No better than insurance.xyz, insurance.onl, insurance.wtf and a thousand others.
