.Boston Domain Extension Off To Slow Start With Just 170 Domains Registered in Sunrise

September 18, 2017 by Michael Berkens

Today we received a Press release proudly announcing that over 150 Brands registered a .Boston new gTLD domain in the Sunrise period which was opened to trademark holders and certain rights holders in Boston.

The PR has a subtitle “Strong pace with .BOSTON domains! – More than 150 brands getting ready with their .BOSTON web domains.”

Well with a population of almost 700,000 people in Boston proper and is the home of 35 colleges/universites

Harvard is the only one of the 35 that registered a .Boston domain.

The Boston Bruins did not register Bruins.Boston; The Patriots did not register Patriots.Boston.

Out of the 100+ hotels in Boston I count 10 domain registrations including 2 for Wynn which doesn’t have a property in Boston.

Out of the hundreds of restaurants in Boston I counted no domain registrations.

“Strong Pace” I don’t think so

General Availability for .Boston opens on October 10th 2017

The only thing that these so called dead in the water ‘new extensions’ have done is to make good dot coms more desirable and valuable.

    Another disaster looming.

Regional governments are footing the bill for this nonsense (aka taxpayers), each one of these geo’s is backed up with huge marketing expenses which we now know will only generate a small user base. There is simply no demand.

These local governments have have had their ego’s stroked by cash hungry registries. Who saw the Simpsons monorail episode?

  8. Hans says

    September 19, 2017 at 4:47 am

Almost all of these are protective registrations not intended for future usage.
    Local interest is shockingly low.

    Dead.
