Poll Results: Less Than 20% Correctly Guessed How Many .Com Registrations There Would Be On 1/1/17

January 1, 2017 by Michael Berkens

A year ago on January 1, 2016 we started a poll asking the question is how many .Com will be registered by next year, 1/1/17?

On January 1, 2006 according to Verisign there were 123,963,640 .Com domain names in the Domain Base.

As of today January 1, 2017 there are 126,930,421 .Com domain names.

As for the poll we gave you these choices and out of the 286 votes cast this was the results:

Less than 125 Million 63

125 Million – 130 Million   43

130 Million – 135 Million 47

135 Million – 140 Million  27

Over 140 Million 106

So the winning answer 125 Million – 130 Million got less than 20% of the votes.

Over 35% of voters picked the most wrong selection of the choices going for over 140 Million .Com domains

For those that left comments on the blog post for bragging rights the reader who uses the handle Lukas won with his comment

“I think the number of domains in 1/1/2017: 127 Million .Com”

Actually of the 16 comments left Lukas was the only one who picked under 130 Million Domains.

So we are going to do it all over again and post the poll for the number of .com domains for 1.1.18

I think it is obvious that 2017 is the year in which the new gtlds will all wither and die painful deaths. Other than country codes, .com, .net and .org will be all that will be left. Of those .com is the most valuable and will always continue to be so then why waste time on .junk?

I find it funny the number of snake oil salesman that are going around trying to pump-pump-pump up the new gtlds. At the appropriately named “namesCON”, many of them are scheduled to pump, er…speak. Prediction: they will all fail miserably in 2017.

So, exactly how worried are you about the value of your portfolio that you feel the need to make such a statement?

.Com registrations obviously will go up again as soon as the drops from the Chinese hype are done.
My guess: On 1/1/2017 the total amount of .com registrations will be 128,100,000.
