Google purchases X.company for think tank

November 17, 2016 by Raymond Hackney

Google continues to dabble with new gtlds, the latest purchase and rebrand is their think tank solve for x.

According to Wikipedia:

Solve for X is a think tank project launched by Google[1] to incite collaboration to solve global issues, “X” representing a remedy.[2] The project kicked off on February 1, 2012 at a three-day convention at CordeValle Resort in San Martin, California. Solve for X talks were presented to 50 people, hosted by Google executives Eric Schmidt, Astro Teller, and Megan Smith.[3] The conventions are expected to occur “a few times a year”.[4] The website inaugurated on February 6, 2012.[5]

Google purchased X.company from a Chinese registrant that owned the one letter .company name. SolveForX.com now redirects to X.company.

Namepros member Cal2 was the person to first notice this and post it on Namepros.

Google seems to be making a big push to help promote the new gTLD’s. But then, they benefit from the success of the new gTLDs as well, so it’s a no-brainer for them to make sich a push. People feel more secure in investing in gTLDs when they see big companies using them. I’m looking forward to seeing how Google capitalizes this in the future.

The asking price tag for xcompany.com is 10k. Surely it went up on the news. Then again, Google cares about old tlds less and less.

Also, some extra knowledge: two years ago xcompany.com resold for just $1k via Sedo auction.

What I like about his name X.company is that the X can mean just about anything.

I really like it a lot.

Yawn. Just another dumb*ss new gtld, destined to die just like all of the others.I do not see why companies waste their time with these knowing that consumers just dont give a darn.

just another way for Google to grab ideas from others and make lots of money … like happened with MY idea of a Moonrovers Prize Competition … now called the GLXP … ghostnasa.com/posts/008moonprize.html
