Las Vegas is getting an NHL (National Hockey League) team, the approval came a few months back but owner Bill Foley still can’t come up with a name.
Foley went to West Point and wanted to have something affiliated with Knights, the Army mascot is the Black Knights, it seems like lately Foley has resorted to playing games with potential domain investors who are trying to guess the team name.
Foley registered a number of domain names and filed trademark applications a couple weeks back.
Greg Wyshynski wrote on Yahoo that Foley admitted to leaking fake names, saying that the Las Vegas Sand Knights were a fake name from the start and were never a real choice.
Now it seems another registration LasVegasDesertKnights.com is up for sale on of all places, Ebay. The package of names consists of LasVegasDesert
So it looks like another name idea is out the window. Foley has said he wants the name to be two words, the NHL said nothing gambling related will be permitted.
Foley hopes to have things settled by October. Perhaps Mr.Foley should have consulted someone from the domain industry like Bill Sweetman or Mike Berkens to coordinate the naming, domain acquisition process.

Desert Knights is a great name and not out the window all he has to do is buy it. It is the most popular name selected yet via several polls and thousands of votes.
Raymond Hackney says
Eric there is speculation he registered it, http://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/nhl-vegas/bill-foley-might-have-new-domain-names-team-could-be-called-las-vegas-desert
Could be another misread by the people covering the news.
eric says
Could be but if that is the most popular name of the 2 or 3 he is trying to trademark why wouldn’t he just buy it? I mean after all Ray it is what we do, sell to end users. I checked and the domains registration’s pre date the TM filing, no first use date in commerce and so forth.
If Desert Knights is indeed the fan favorite of the names then he may be getting them cheap at this point.
Unless he already bought or owns them and just is not willing to let that cat out of the bag yet.
J.R says
What does a Desert Knight look like? Probably like a member of Isis or Al Qaueda or even just a goat herder in the Middle East or similar area; which is why I don’t think Desert Knights makes any sense for this NHL team.
ericb says
It has already been described in his interview yesterday. Your name DesertRams.com is no an option, it ends in Knights, sorry JR but out of thousands of votes and various polls the majority disagrees with you. Desert reps Vegas, he mentioned the colors being like Red Rock Canyon under a steel mesh jersey and a logo which brings his environmental tie in as he wanted. That all points to the popular name, Desert. The Knights aspect is clearly for him but it is his team. If he wants a desert knight to exist, it will.
If he wished to be a desert bighorn sheep he would have been.
J.R says
Good luck to Mr. Foley, but every name I have seen mentioned is owned by the domain community. However, if he really wants two words related to Nevada, DesertRams.com might work…
eric says
Hire Bill or Michael to negotiate the purchase!
Bill Sweetman says
I’d suggest the name “Nevada Ninjas” but I may be biased. ;+)
steve says
@Bill,
I believe all the comments, except the one by Raymond, may be biased.
But that’s the way it is is.

Hockey can’t be played in the sand and ice doesn’t form in the desert. Compared to football, baseball, and soccer played on grass, hockey is the only sport that requires power, a supporting industry of peripheral refrigeration and electrical engineers to produce the rink. There’s really nothing literal about any of it, it’s all artificial, so any name will work as long as it’s fun, sounds fierce, like the makings of champions and good luck with a great domain deal or better yet registering one.
