New gTLD .Tube Goes Live Thursday: Less Than 50 Sunrise Domain Registrations By TM Holders

July 6, 2016 by Michael Berkens

The new gTLD .Tube goes live where domain names can be registered on a first come, first serve basis at a handful of domain name registrars starting at 14:00 UTC.

However some of the largest registrars are not listed on the .Tube website including Godaddy.com; Chinese registrars West.cn, HiChina (www.net.cn) and ename.net.

Actually out of the top 10 domain name registrars for new gTLD’s according to ntldstats.com, only 1 of the top 10 domain registrars is participating which is Uniregistry.

I took a quick look at the zone file for .tube, which did not seem to have a Early Access Program or a landrush period, so all the registrations were taken by trademark holders in Sunrise.

However, I found just 40 domain name registrations by trademark holders in the zone file, which is definitely on the low end of numbers of registrations for new gTLD’s. Many of the 40 were registered by Google brands.

Big misses from Sunrise registrations are any for Twitter or Apple which typically protect many of its products and brands.

Here are the domain names that were registered in Sunrise according to the zone file for .Tube as of publication:

    the list doesn’t include You.Tube

you.tube wasn’t applied for and not sure it could be in sunrise since the trademark is for “youtube” and not “‘you”

They are gouging trademark holders. This TLD will flop.
