.Law Gets 5K Registrations in 1st 90 days: We Break Down The Numbers

February 4, 2016 by Michael Berkens 4 Comments

According to a press release out today, Minds + Machines Group Limited (LSE:MMX), the owner of the new “.law” and .abogado (Lawyer in Spanish) top-level domains, “announced that .law has successfully completed its first 90 days since general availability having fulfilled more than 5,000 verified registrations, with over 700 premium names including numerous domains which have sold for $100,000 or more.”

However the press release is silent on the results of .abogado (spanish for lawyer) which was released by M +M at the same time as .law, which  according to ntldstats.com has just 194 domain name registrations.

.Law was won in a private auction and reportedly cost somewhere over $19 million dollars to secure.

It has been reported the wholesale cost of a .Law registration is $150 meaning at 5,000 registrations the registry took in $750,000 in registration fees however according to ntldstats.com, MindsandMachines.com the registrar, has over 58% of all .law registrations and they are charging $210 a year for a .law registration so that amount M +M has received for .Law registrations would increase by around $175,000.

So that is less than $1 Million in domain registrations, plus what they received for the 700+ premium domain names they are reporting selling which total was undisclosed.

To compare the new gTLD .Legal has 7,511 registrations; .Attorney has 8,439 registrations and .Lawyer has 13,250 registrations. All three are Rightside TLD’s and are unrestricted.

Here is the rest of the press release:

Antony Van Couvering, CEO of Minds + Machines is quoted as saying:

“We are very pleased with the success .law has seen in the first three months of its launch, which is evidenced not only by significant overall registration but by the adoption of category-defining names such as asbestos.law and aviation.law by powerhouse litigation firms Simmons Hanly Conroy, and Kreindler & Kreindler respectively, the strong response indicates that the market clearly sees the unique opportunity .law presents and the value of a meaningful verification process designed to help ensure the integrity of the domain name.”

.law, and .abogado, are new restricted top-level domains (TLDs) that aim to promote trust in the professional legal community by creating exclusive online spaces in which only lawyers that are regulated and licensed to practice law may register a domain name. Registrations for .law domain names include AmLaw 100 law firms, leading national litigation firms, state legal associations, major legal media outlets and legal technology organizations, as well as small law firms and individual lawyers.

Simmons Hanly Conroy LLC registers asbestos.law and mesothelioma.law

Having recovered more than $5 billion in verdicts and settlements for plaintiffs, Simmons Hanly Conroy LLC is one of the nation’s largest mesothelioma law firms and has represented thousands of families affected by mesothelioma across the country. The firm has registered both mesothelioma.law and asbestos.law.

“Our firm is dedicated to helping people whose lives have been shattered by a mesothelioma or lung cancer diagnosis caused by exposure to asbestos through no fault of their own,” said John Simmons, Chairman, Simmons Hanly Conroy.  “With approximately 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the United States every year, it is important that we increase awareness among those who may have been affected. The short, easy-to-remember .law domain names are new tools we can use to help achieve that goal.”

Kreindler & Kreindler LLP registers aviation.law

As one of the largest and most successful aviation accident law firms in the world, Kreindler & Kreindler LLP lawyers are the leading advocates for victims and their families in thousands of commercial, corporate, military and general aviation cases. The firm’s cases include nearly every major commercial airline disaster, such as Pan Am Lockerbie

Flight 103, TWA Flight 800, and more recently Continental Connection (Colgan) Flight 3407, Asiana Flight 214, Germanwings Flight 9525, and Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Considering it’s only been in GA 90 days, Law seems to be performing better than it’s three competing namesakes ( legal, attorney, lawyer). and certainly attracting a good fee.

Averaged 7 registrations in a week, so it’s take up is in line with the others currently so it is no better or worse. The question is premium fees and the difference in standard renewals. Look at them all a year from now once .law gets it’s first renewal drop out of the way
