Godaddy May Be The World’s Largest Domain Registrar But Not For New gTLD’s

November 4, 2015 by Michael Berkens

Godaddy.com, which is the world’s largest domain name registrar (having the most domain names under management) is no longer the number 1 domain name registrar for new gTLD domains.

According to ntldstats.com, Godaddy.com has fallen into the 2nd position worldwide when it comes to domain registered with new domain extensions, known as new gTLD’s.

A China based domain registrar, Chengdu West Dimension Digital Technology Co., Ltd. whose website is West.cn has passed Godaddy when it comes to domain name registrars for new gTLD domain names.

Chengdu West has over 1,070,000 new gTLD’s domain names registered through representing 11.83% of all new gTLD registrations while Godaddy has over 953,000 new gTLD registered through it representing 10.56% of all new registered gTLD’s.

Chengdu West again according to ntldstats.com has sold more than 100,000 domain names in four new gTLD’s extensions:

TLD      Domains  % of extension

1. .xyz 346,759 32.43 %
2. .top 266,372 24.91 %
3. .win 184,434 17.25 %
4. .wang 132,222 12.36 %

Interesting,  overall the three new gTLD domain name extensions in terms of number of registrations are the same as the top 3 of Chengdu:

.XYZ

.TOP

.Win

Just an interesting observation: The curves generated by the daily registration numbers for .top, .win and .wang, all follow a smooth growth line.

The anomaly is the curve of daily XYZ registrations.

In absolute numbers, Chengdu grew more than 20% of its size on XYZ registrations alone, and that happened in less than a week.

    Acro

Yup and .net which has falling numbers of domain registrations for most of the year below 15M no has zoomed up in the past week by over 400K domain names without any obvious specials.

    How did that happen?

my guess is 95%+ all the new .net registrations are short letter and numbered domains registered by people in China or those looking to sell to them

Its a strange days in domain world

You are correct on both counts 🙂

Noticed last night Godaddy was advertising heavily on shark tank reruns and not a single mention of anything but dotcom.

I noticed that too; they started advertising on the show this week. Maybe Godaddy don’t want to confuse their new potential TV audience with .confusion TLDs, but rather something they’re already used to, and are comfortable with?

Nevertheless, anyone visiting the Godaddy website to register domains would surely see available options in newgtlds, so it’s still a win—win if I may say.

Out of the four, .xyz has an advantage of earlier GA and half the price of .top and .wang; .win is about the same price with .xyz. Should they be sold at same price, .top can be the most registered.

    @Rathead

Yeah, I saw a few Godaddy commercials on the Travel Channel & CNN last night — all about getting a .com.

About one year later, still no .top available at GD.
Seems a bit that they are in ‘fear’ of .top in some wayyy.
I think from the moment on, when GD will offer .top, GD will get huge .top registrations.

And, I think, they will offer .top soon.
    It’s time nowww.
