Fast Company: Rips .Green Calling It “An Idea Whose Time Has Passed”

February 23, 2015 by Michael Berkens

Over the years I have read a ton of stories on new gTLD program and certainly some particular new gTLD’s, but few have gone as far as FastCompany just published on the new gTLD .Green in a story entitled: “Why The New .Green Domain Name Is An Idea Thankfully Past Its Time”

“The problem is that (.Green) maybe an idea whose time has passed.”

“Ten years ago, setting up a .green domain may have made sense; so few companies were doing green things.”

“These days .green seems passé and somewhat meaningless.”

“After all, what exactly does “green” mean?

“It may denote a shift to environmental action, a colloquial word for dollars, or perhaps something other than blue or yellow.”

“It’s also the case that anybody can be green.”

The article goes on to criticize, Annalisa Roger, founder of the DotGreen Community saying:

“Roger has no filtering process to wheedle the many, many people who claim environmental consciousness while ruining the planet. In fact, it’s a good bet that .green will appeal most to people who are insecure about their greenness and feel the need to compensate. ”

“Those who are genuinely green will be green anyway and won’t feel the need to set up a new site to tell the world about it.”

“There are several reasons why “.green” might be an unimaginative move in this day and age. ”

“It smacks of scoring points when green should be part of what organizations do anyway. At minimum, there are surely better ways to draw attention to your environmentally-friendly venture.”

These new gTLD’s will come and go -I would say only two may become “Main stream” .io and .me and the reason behind my thinking is that these are the two that the “Geeks” are using for start ups both here (re Bruce Marler) and in Europe ( many .io) You only need one major hit out of all those companies to change everything. We own the .io of a large city but will probably buy more.

So, london555 says only two new gTLD’s may become “Main Stream”, .io and .me…… Guess we should all just give up now.

Comments like that add zero to the conversation and the reason why most people won’t bother to post on these blogs. The author puts in a lot of hard work here perhaps you could do a little better. Have a nice week.

First, .IO and .ME are country codes, not GTLDs, new or otherwise.

.IO has shown up recently and I was confused why it is popular. It stands for British Indian Ocean Territory – that is clearly not the reason. I thought maybe Initial Offering, like IPO, but that isn’t it either.

Input Output. That is what the trendsetters are hanging their web-hats on.

    Input Output?

That may be great for Geek-to-Geek contacts, but once it gets into the real world I don’t think it has any significance. And it would take a lot more than one company to change that. Bank of America, Fox news and other companies put a whole lot of money into promoting their .Mobi names, it made no difference eventually.

Those are some very valid points especially re.mobi .A while back we hand reg’d a .mobi that a person paid five figures for a few years back. That said-why would Bruce Marler-perhaps the brightest of the “geek” domain professionals use the .me extension for his exceptionally successful Missouri.me app for the Apple phone. When anyone is buying or using any extension other .com -with a few exceptions-you’re simply taking a shot. We own ten of the “category” killer names( Insurance-CreditCards etc) in an odd extension-why? We’re taking a shot that hopefully someone feels they can really create a full blown “brand”-will they? Who knows but we’re taking that shot. Thanks for posting such thoughtful comments.

.ME is a different game, along with .LA, .CO and any other 2 letter extension that has meaning in a major language. But would you prefer Missouri.MO??? There are so many possibilities to compete with. That pushes prices down.

As for .GREEN (wasn’t there a blog post about .Green?) … There was a group trying to make .GREEN meaningful, but they were whipsawed by the big money and endless delays required by ICANN and had to withdraw, losing their investment.

The “group trying to make .GREEN meaningful” did in fact withdraw their application, but has since partnered with Afilias to operate and market .green
