Registry Of New gTLD .OOO Predicts 35,000 Sunrise Domains & 1-2 Million Registrations In 6-12 Months

September 23, 2014 by Michael Berkens

The Registry for the new gTLD ‘.ooo’ (Dot-Triple Letter O) by Ahmedabad-based IT firm Infibeam.com which “is aimed at providing alternate domain registration solutions to those who have failed to locate their brand name or business names on .com domain, has some pretty lofty goals for the extension.

The registry is predicting 35,000-40,000 trademark registrations and over the next 6-12 months expects to get about 1-2 million domain registrations

“The new GTLD is the first of a kind initiative by any e-commerce company. ”

“This domain will be used by small enterprises as well as large corporate. We expect many to migrate from .com to .ooo as there is higher possibility of name availability here,” said Vishal Mehta, Founder, Infibeam.com.

“”Also, ‘.ooo’ is seen as a mobile-friendly domain as it reduces usage of multiple keys on phones.”

The sunrise phase opened September 22, 2014 (12 UTC-5.30 am IST) for trademark holders to safeguard relevant registrations. They are given time till October 23, when it will open for general availability.

Of course despite what the the this is not the first new gTLD of a kind initiative to have a short yet meaningless new gTLD, I think .XYZ is falls into that category.

Second of all if you have to explain the your new gTLD is made up of the letter O repeated three times, rather than the number zero, that’s not a good sign.

I have no idea, where the registry is coming up with a number of 35,000 Sunrise registrations since that is more than the number of trademarks registered in the Trademark Clearing House which is required for a Sunrise application and the most number of trademark registrations for any new gTLD is closer to 500.

As far as 1-2 Million registrations in 6-12 months after launch, well I hope they are planning on giving away a 1-2 million free domains.

There’re a billion Chinese; if they have so far only registered the following numbers in their new gTLDs in almost 6 months:

    .公司 36,630
    .在线 35,935

Therefore, the .000 string will register what?

    Let’s think for a sec.

All these things could be calculated way in advance.

I have what he is having …

    Trademark = nearl extortion …
same as for the rest of all other new GTLD defensive registrations.” register them before someone else does”

Such a waste of resources! How much will this registry have spent when all is said and done to accomplish nothing? Polling consumers in advance would have saved them the expense.

Supposing some lone website DID choose to build on these triple not-quite-zeros, how would they say the name of their website when speaking to human beings?

    Example.ooo

“Visit us us at Example dot ooooooooooohhhhhhh!”
Like some yokel expressing cartoonish astonishment as Martians disembark their flying saucer?

    or
“Visit us us at Example dot Oh! Oh! Oh!”
Like that obnoxious “Oh Face” guy from “Office Space” imitating an orgasm?

Either way, the name requires an addendum:
    “Remember that’s 3 letter O’s — not 3 ZEROs.”

Cumbersome explanations of a nonsensical AND ambiguous domain extension are exactly what brands have been missing!

I totally understand that those numbers were the ones mentioned in the financial part of the application, but the registry would probably be better not repeating those numbers in public.

Very high predictions of registration for the first year. I admire their positive outlook.
We’ll revisit this prediction after 1 year.

    Cheers.
