.XYZ Claims Its The Most Used New gTLD Extension

August 20, 2014 by Michael Berkens

In a blog post Daniel Negari the CEO of the .XYZ registry claims that .XYZ its the most used new gTLD extension.

The post uses the numbers furnished by ntldstats.com that we disclosed  in our post the other day that looks at the percentage of registered new gTLD domain names that are parked by extension.

“”Let’s look at utilization on a few levels:

1. Registration numbers

2. Active website statistics

3. Quality of these active websites

1. Registration numbers

.xyz has received the most registrations of all new gTLDs with 447,544 domains registered.

2. Active website statistics

According to nTLDStats – which has a new ‘Parked’ Domain feature (for the record, I disagree with their methodology) – .XYZ also has the highest number of active websites.

Top 4 New gTLDs by number of active websites

1. .XYZ = 23,254 Active  (447,544 Domains – 424,290 Parked Domains)

2. .Berlin = 18,740 Active (137,882 Domains – 119,142 Parked Domains)

3. .Club = 19,904 Active (97,482 Domains – 77,578 Parked Domains)

4. .Guru = 16,179 Active (68,698 Domains – 52,519 Parked Domains)

(Source: ntldstats.com; retrieved 8/20/2014. The active number of websites is derived from removing the number of parked sites from the overall registration numbers for each gTLD.)

Among all the new domain extensions, .xyz has the most registrations and the most active number of websites This information is useful, however, only provides a snapshot of a domain extension’s success.

Keep in mind .xyz launched on June 2nd, which is later than the others in this analysis.”

So if you run the numbers actually Daniel is correct.

Due to the number of registrations even at a parked domain rate of 94.27% it means that almost 6% are not parked or in use since there are only 3 new gTLD’s that have a parking rate of less than 50% and none of those have volume over 50,000.

Do you know any of the new active sites built? I was just thinking the other day, some of the new registries should highlight sites being built on their extensions. I would like to see a few that are built on .club. I was navigating the web the other day typing in things like Eat.club, and English.club which are some of the domains that were bought, but those weren’t active yet. If you know of some actives, please let share. I’d like to check them out.

    Thanks,

    Jason

Love massaged data. They can be turned into performance champions.

But 424,290 Parked Domains in the XYZ realm aren’t just “parked”, they are actually robo-registrations that their registrants did not initiate.

The Network Solutions promo is not mentioned anywhere, so maybe it needs to be included in that “booooooom!” post.

Lies, damned lies, and registration statistics? 🙂 Those robo-regs are very problematic. While it is a short-term marketing strategy to make .XYZ appear to be the largest new gTLD by volume, the fact that these are non-user initiated registrations and are PPC parked could create other problems. Who benefits from the PPC? How does this play out with trademarks and brands?

.xyz is just a fictitious house of cards, son of the current bubble, with fake/manipulated figures.

Daniel Negari continues to deceive and mislead consumers. His #1 sales pitch — literally his #1?

    “1. Registration numbers
.xyz has received the most registrations of all new gTLDs with 447,544 domains registered.”

I’d call him a scoundrel if he merely continued in impenitent silence concerning the fabricated numbers. As he isn’t silent but goes on selling people his wares by touting a premise he surely knows to be false, there’s no phrase for him except to say he’s beneath contempt.

.XYZ registrants, start preparing for the class action lawsuit versus the .XYZ registry!

I also just did a quick check to see where we stand on DI PRO’s most popular top 100 based on Alexa rankings. DI PRO currently features the top 1000 although, given the proprietary nature of Kevin’s service I elected not to print the full list but I am certain he will be ok with me sharing a portion of it. Colin,
Alexa’s data has been open to manipulation (fake users and bots using the browser plugin) and its country level “top sites” listings are often problematic as a result. While Alexa does try to compensate for these issues, the Alexa data is not considered reliable by those in the SEO business. The geographical audience may provide indications of manipulation especially when the site appears to have a higher audience in countries where blackhat SEO practices are common rather than the site’s target country market.

The .CLUB gTLD had an Active/Unclassified percentage of 7.84% which is to be expected in a recently launched TLD. The most important aspect now is development and you are not going to see that in the Alexa stuff or in simple registration volume.

  9. Ben says

    August 20, 2014 at 6:49 pm

You can make numbers tell what you want. it s only interpretation.

    Daniel negari quote::

Top 4 New gTLDs by number of active websites
    1. .xyz = 23,254 Active (447,544 Domains – 424,290 Parked Domains)
    2. .berlin = 18,740 Active (137,882 Domains – 119,142 Parked Domains)
    3. .club = 19,904 Active (97,482 Domains – 77,578 Parked Domains)
    4. .guru = 16,179 Active (68,698 Domains – 52,519 Parked Domains)

    So, then…

1.For .xyz, 23,254 active out of 447,544 represent 5.1% of all XYZ domain register who are online

2.For .berlin, 18,740 active out of 137,882 domains represent 13% of all .berlin domain register who are online

    3. For .club, 19,904 active out of 97,482 domains represent 20% of all .club domain register who are online

4.for .guru , 16,179 active out of 68,698 domains represent 23% of all .guru domain register who are on line

so, proportionnaly, the facts are .xyz rank 4th on those 4 extension. And then, taking in consideration or not the free give away .xyz by NetSol. it could give another view.

But, it s all numbers. Personnaly, I bought about 25-30 of some new tld’s. and none of .xyz. Doesn’t suit my needs.

    Good day

    Ben

To be fair the ntldstats.com pointed out “parked domains” which included other type of situations including non-resolving domains.

Your using the word online, of course parked pages are online so its the wrong word.

    Active is the better word

      Hi Michael,

I did mention x active out of … But, yes, it s more appropriate. And actually, parking a domain doesn’t brings new stuffs to the internet.

And, i also forgot to mention, but Daniel Negari should had put .Club second. 19,904 is higher than 18,740 for .berlin .

It s probably a mistake. Maths ain’t Daniel is strongest skill 😉

      Ben

  11. Snoopy says

    August 20, 2014 at 7:50 pm

It look to be like .xyz has around 25,000-30,000 genuine registration so the claim does not look right.

A domain that is “Not parked” does not mean a domain is being “Used”. You could have domain with no DNS, or domains redirected, and that would count as “used” according to Daniel’s methods.

  12. Michael Berkens says

    August 20, 2014 at 8:24 pm

The numbers didn’t come from XYZ they came from ntldstats.com

They are the one who came up with the “parked” number of domain per extension

They defined what they considered a parked page and then applied the same rules across all extensions

    http://www.thedomains.com/2014/08/18/ntldstats-80-of-all-new-gtlds-are-parked-buzz-has-the-least/

    http://ntldstats.com/parking/tld

“Parked domains are defined on the site as any domains which has a traditional parked page which also seems to include registrar placeholders as well as any non-resolving site and those “without content”, those without a DNS record, and those being redirected to another domain””

  14. John McCormac says

    August 21, 2014 at 2:00 am

The problem with using ntldstats stuff is that it is simplistic and misleading. Categorising website usage is a complex business and ntldstats seemed to be just reacting to the headline on The Domains about Verisign’s survey. The numerology from ntldstats is not reliable because there are many different categories of usage.

  15. John McCormac says

    August 21, 2014 at 2:35 am

These are the numbers from the 26th June .XYZ Web Usage survey run by HosterStats.com on 26th June. 213,196 domains were surveyed (Full Zone Survey).
    | Category – Domains – Percentage |
    | Active/Unclassified | 5699 | 2.6731 |
    | Brand Protection | 49 | 0.0230 |
    | In-page Redirect | 42 | 0.0197 |
    | External TLD Redirect | 371 | 0.1740 |
    | Forbidden | 350 | 0.1642 |
    | Holding Pages | 3347 | 1.5699 |
    | Internal Site Redirect | 1212 | 0.5685 |
    | Matched External TLD Redirect | 91 | 0.0427 |
    | Duplicate Content (2 sites) | 46 | 0.0216 |
    | Duplicate Content (>2 sites) | 98 | 0.0460 |
    | PPC Parking | 192450 | 90.2690 |
    | Generic Redirect | 49 | 0.0230 |
    | For Sale | 2223 | 1.0427 |
    | Unavailable | 23 | 0.0108 |
    | In Zone Redirect | 74 | 0.0347 |
    | No Response | 7072 | 3.317 |

The top ten new gTLDs were surveyed and the results (percentages) were posted on HosterStats.com along with the results from 110K domain surveys for .COM, .CO, .EU TLDs. HosterStats.com has been running large (multi-million domain) TLD web usage surveys and country level monthly surveys for years. The Active/Unclassified category is generally a good indication of development in a TLD. The Unclassified element in Active/Unclassified is there because there are some classifications (e-commerce/adult/tobacco/alcohol/Facebook/Google+/Twitter/Pintrest/Linkedin/Business usage/Rate of Abandonment etc) that are of interest to registries.

There is some usage and development in .XYZ but it is absolutely swamped by the robo-registrations from the NSI deal. This deal accounts for much of the PPC activity in the gTLD.

Alexa also collects its data from those who downloaded the tool bar and doesn’t count mobile visitors right, just desktops and laptops

    • John McCormac says

      August 21, 2014 at 10:29 am

The Alexa data is problematic, Michael,
Basically it is open to manipulation. While some of the sites at the top of the lists might be genuinely high traffic sites in their markets, the accuracy declines going down the list. Not including mobile traffic when a major part of a site’s traffic is from mobile devices would also make some sites appear less important. It might even be possible to reverse engineer the plugin and send the data that Alexa expects to collect from a page impression using bots. Alexa does have a website analytics service (simlar to Google etc) but sites may not use it. One of the biggest issues for high profile/high traffic websites is sorting out the human users from the bots and scrapers. Some analytics packages do a good job of this. However with advances in programming, (headless browsers where the program acts like a human operated web browser but is, in reality, a program being run from a server that is just scraping data) make it more difficult to get the figures right.

We carried out the analysis with another method : the visibility in google. Search for “site:.xyz” or “site:.club”, will give you another ranking.
.xyz is pretty far away in that ranking.

    .xyz : 123 google results – number 14
    .berlin : 535 . number 1
    .club : .205 – number 9
    .guru : 210 – number 8
    .wang : 174 – number 11
    .photography : 456 – number 3
    .email : 431 – number 4
    .link : 187 – number 10
    .xn--3ds443g : 40 – number 15
    .today : 144 – number 12
    .tips : 273 – number 7
    .company : 491- number 2
    .solutions : 369 – number 6
    .center : 127 – number 13
    .expert : 380 – number 5

all results to be found http://dot-stories.blogspot.ch

I guess the various methodologies give various results but trends are clearly starting to appear..

    • Acro says

      August 22, 2014 at 12:19 pm

This is by far the less reliable method, as Google’s results vary tremendously based on the geolocation.

      • John McCormac says

        August 22, 2014 at 12:42 pm

        There are other issues, Acro,
Google’s site detection is largely driven by link crawling and Google’s FUD buddies and propagandists have frightened people into not actively linking to other websites. And without links, Google has to resort to other methods (Google Analytics, Adwords, zonefiles etc) to finding new websites. Google’s site: operator also returns results of varying quality and this is common knowledge in the SEO business.

        • Acro says

          August 22, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Yes, I agree. Google does not crawl everything although with their new Google Domains project that might become easier. I ignore all such silly “remove link” requests – unless they are willing to pay me for my time 😛

          • Sean Sullivan says

            August 25, 2014 at 12:58 pm

            @Acro

What do you charge to remove a link? I recently asked someone to remove a link pointing to a site I acquired and they said they same thing.

They wanted $150 to remove the link. Never heard that before. Most people either just ignore you or remove the link at some point. Not sure what market rate is for removing a link, so I’m curious what you charge.

          • Acro says

            August 25, 2014 at 1:02 pm

@ Sean – I don’t. That was just a figure of speech to emphasize the absurdity of link removal requests based on Google recommendations, as it clashes with the concept of the WWW. If one wants to be nice, they can add “nofollow” to the link. It’s the same as if the link was removed. But think about it: if you received hundreds of such requests, it’d be lots of time to spend doing just that.
