Go Daddy CEO calls current domain space polluted and not descriptive

January 13, 2014 by Raymond Hackney

Blake Irving CEO of Go Daddy sat down at the Consumer Electronics Show and gave a talk about the changes taking place in the domain space.

Irving calls the current space polluted and talks about the new names being descriptive. He talks about pizza, doctor, dentist and then says LA, of course LA has been available and is a cctld. This inclusion is why some think that the repurposed country codes may get an extra boost as people just include them when talking about the new gtlds.

Sounds like it is going to get much more polluted with some of these gTLD’s.

I agree with @rick… I just don’t know how to value some of this new gTLD’s.

Oh I agree with Rick on that point, pollution will occur with 800 new gtlds that provide overlapping choices that cause confusion.

Godaddy will say whatever will make them the most money in the near term. They have discontinued many coupons, and have taken a corporate strategy to squeeze more margins from products. They will lose customers, but selling keyword.crap for $12K will get them more profits, so now the .com space has become polluted for the time being, until the next trend emerges. We all know how much you can trust a CEO… if history has anything to say.

So the solution to a polluted environment is to introduce more clutter/litter?

That basically explains the futility of most of these new gtlds. There is no need for them. And there are way too many words in just the English language, let alone all other languages, to try to introduce clarity on that basis.

I do find it ironic that he would call the domain space polluted now. What is the solution to pollution? I guess it is heaping mounds of garbage extensions onto the pile.

GoDaddy needs to walk a fine line between maximizing profits and still remaining credible. They need to realize where the vast majority of their business comes from.

If GoDaddy is going down the path of using blatant hucksterism to sell products, they might lose some customers and credibility in the process.

Brad you make a good point, and I firmly believe Go Daddy does not care if they lose some .com business, they are all in on a higher margin product.

what a non statement. domains can be as descriptive or non descriptive as they want to be.

What extension does Go Daddy uses?

It is funny the guy behind domaining.com is trying to sell 4L’s .com for $50K, then is questioning registering .com… dilemma, or Pure BS? I guess anyone can be bought!
