Domain Name Game.Cn Sells For a Record $511,000

January 7, 2014 by Michael Berkens 9 Comments

According to nicenic.net,the domain name Game.CN sold for $511,972.38.

.Cn is the ccTLD for China.

According to the story, the domain was a previously reserved .CN domain name Game.CN which was in a public auction, which ended in bidding 3.098 million cny,” with intensive competition of 686 bids in the last hour”.

“”That Game.cn broke three million refreshed .CN open bidding history, also won the big honor of most expensive .CN domain name in 2013

But why can Game.CN get so popular? It’s a good question, game means 游戏 in Chinese, Game.CN is short and easy to remember, and now the hot gaming market, the gaming industry has deservedly become one of the Internet’s most profitable industry, Game.CN’s value is thus demonstrated. Game.CN can be used for gaming sites.

Most gaming websites were using creative domain names like “digital + game”  or pure digital domains. Although the game industry favored the digital domain, but domain industry prefer game domains with specific meanings, for example, Shanda paid big money to buy javaGame.cn.

Compared to other “game combination” creative domain names, Game.CN would have less limitation but more applicability. It is suitable for WebGame, MobileGame, online game or even gaming company’s official website. In addition, Game.CN can contribute to stronger brand awareness, i.e. Sina Weibo paid a lot for weibo.com and made the concept of Weibo = Chinese twitter deeply rooted in Chinese netizens.

It is reported that Game.com domain name had been registered in early 1998 and got online, it also intensified the competition on hot domain Game.CN for the domestic game companies.

    Very nice sale. The gaming industry is going through some crazy times (in a good way) and the internet will be the vehicle more than ever now. Especially in places like India, China, Japan and of course USA. Its nuts what they/we are developing. Good time to have game related domains.

    Only a buyer and your negotiating skills can give you an answer to that question.

    @Ramahn

    The gaming industry is in turmoil right now which is good for some, and not so good for others. But there are way too many games out there competing for everyone’s dollars, which is why ‘game bundle sites’ such as HumbleBundle basically give away a bunch of games for a few dollars.

    Steam, GOG, and other downloadable game sites are offering deals up to 90% off on select games… especially over this past Christmas sale season. It’s insane. I remember the good old days in the 80s and 90s, when the retail price of my games for the PC was $49.95.

    Now I’d probably price them at $9.95 tops, and expect big sales only when I gave at least 50% off of that price. (I’ve long since retired from the PC game development scene, although I’m still active in mobile app development, where prices are lower, but you have a huge audience of potential buyers.)

    There’s still money to be made in games, but you have to be savvy and have a great product. I’ve known many newer game developers who for years only sold maybe 20 copies of their PC games per month, at $20 per pop. (That’s absolutely nothing.) Now some are doing better, making hundreds of thousands of dollars in a week, due to the bundle sales. But it’s reaching a point of saturation where buyers realize they have too many games that they’ll never play, due to being able to buy them so cheap. We may see another crash again, like we did before Nintendo came upon the scene. (After Atari screwed things up.)

    Hopefully not… hopefully we’ll keep this ‘collector mentality’ going where buyers reflexively buy games they’ll likely never play, just because it’s on sale for $2.99. And now, with so many more millions of buyers on the Internet than we had in the 90s, you can actually do pretty well selling at that price.
