IAB: Internet Ad Revenue Hits All Time High Of $9.6 Billion In 1st Q

June 3, 2013 by Michael Berkens

According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) 1st quarter 2013 Internet Ad revenue hit an all time record with  $9.6 billion in sales representing a 15.6% increase over the $8.3 billion figure reported in the first quarter 2012.

“Internet advertising revenue continues to exhibit double-digit growth, even as the business matures,” said Sherrill Mane, Senior Vice President, Research, Analytics & Measurement, IAB. “This is an accomplishment that can be attributed to growing recognition by marketers that digital advertising is a critical part of all marketing in today’s world.”

The following chart tracks first quarter ad revenue since 1996; dollar figures are rounded.

“The IAB sponsors the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report, which is conducted independently by the New Media Group of PwC.”

“The results are considered the most accurate measurement of interactive advertising revenues because the data is compiled directly from information supplied by companies selling advertising on the Internet. The survey includes data concerning online advertising revenues from Web sites, commercial online services, free email providers, and all other companies selling digital advertising”.

“The full report is issued twice yearly for full and half-year data, and topline quarterly estimates are issued for the first and third quarters. PwC does not audit the information and provides no opinion or other form of assurance with respect to the information. Past reports are available at www.iab.net/AdRevenueReport.

Invert the chart to see adsense and parking revenue.

    Why is that?

    Sad but true.

Adsense says I get paid 65% of CPC but that must be some creative accounting practices.

@RS… ’cause google is more of a monopoly than standard oil ever dreamed of being. and anytime a $50,000 donation to a house committee chairman can get you $500,000,000 (’cause 500 mil is such a small amount these days) you should just go ahead and make it. and i think eric schmidt will eventually petition the pope for sainthood but i have no inside information on that.

Trying to make sense of this stat in view of @MHB’s own headlines on theDomains since 1012:

1.19.12 Google Reports Earnings & Misses: Clicks Up 34% But Cost Per Click Down 8% : Stock Is Down 10%

7.19.12 Google Reports: Revenues Up 35%, Paid Clicks Up 42%; Cost Per Click Down 16%; $43 Billion In The Bank

4.12.12 Google Reports: Revenues Up 24% Clicks Up 39%; Average Cost Per Click Down 12% Ends Q With $50 Billion In The Bank

10.18.12 Google Leaks Earnings Early & Stock Drops 10%: Paid Clicks Up 33%; Cost Per Click Down 15% : Has $45 Billion In The Bank

1.22.13 Google Reports: Revenues Up 36%; Paid Clicks Up 24%; Cost Per Click Down 6%

4.18.13 Google Reports: Revenue Up 31%; Paid Clicks Up 20%; Cost Per Click Down 4%

The revenue must be coming from video and other advertising. Cost per click down is no surprise, considering the maturity of the internet, and awareness that clicking an adwords ad is simply going to gum up your broadband with beacons and cookies so that you have to wait until all the advertiser’s ignorant and insulting analysis is finsihed loading. Noone will click on Adwords anymore. Do a poll how many domainers click on Adwords. Maybe I have done it twice purposefully in 16 years on the internet. Adwords ads are just offensive.
