Motorola Objects To Demand Media’s Application for .Moto

March 28, 2013 by Michael Berkens

Motorola Trademark Holdings LLC has filed a Legal Rights  Objection to Demand Media, Inc. (DMD) application for the new gTLD domain name .Moto

Motorola Trademark Holdings LLC is  owned by Google which also applied to for the .Moto new gTLD.

According to Demand Media, Inc:

“The term “moto” is a generic and broadly used word that holds particular affinity for people and organizations interested and engaged in the world of motorcycles and other motor-equipped vehicles. ”

“”The desired reputation of .moto is that of an open namespace where everyone is welcomed as engaged participants.”

“As such, we expect that participants will create innovative and specialized products and services that connect with their audience. For example, a motocross fan club may congregate to discuss recent races or share experiences with specific kinds of equipment and accessories. Manufacturers might market their lines of motorcycles and after-market parts. Racetracks may promote their upcoming slate of races and recent results.”

Looks like Motorola planned a bit ahead on this one, with their Sept 2012 trademark registration of MOTO. Of course it probably would look better if they had registered it way back when they were running their “Hello, Moto” TV commercials.

I still have my StarTAC phone, although it’s long deactivated. Is anyone still using a Motorola cell phone or other device? I haven’t been paying attention to what they’ve been up to, lately.
