PopeDomain Name Scramble: PopeFrancis.co; PopeFrancis.Tv PopeFrancis.Me All Registered Within Minutes

March 13, 2013 by Michael Berkens

Within minutes of Jorge Bergoglio named the new pope and taking on the name Pope Francis a bunch of domain names were registered.

The domain name PopeFrancis.com as pointed out was registered in 2010 by DomainNameWire.com was registered back in 2010, however in just within minutes, probably seconds of taking the name Pope Francis the domain names  Popefrancis.co and PopeFranics.tv, PopeFrancis.me and PopeFrancis.co.uk were all registered.

However the domain names PopeFrancis are as of publication are still available in many TLD’s/ccTLD’s extensions including  .tel, .Io, .Fr, .So, .Mx and even the .com.ar extension which is for Argentina the country Jorge Bergoglio is from.

For everyone else the new gTLD of  .Church and .Catholic maybe coming.

Waste of money buying these domains. I enjoy these types of domain registrations because it decreases competition. While everyone focused on 3D and cloud, the better domains were sitting around in auctions and were unregistered.

News about the new Pope is going to create traffic among Catholic followers. TheNewPope.com seems like a good domain name. Michael owns this domain. The dot co is available to register.

A decent domain registered a week ago: WhoIsThePope.com. The keywords are searched 1,000 times per month. Surprised nobody registered this domain name sooner.

I would stay away from exact name domains in them. The New Pope and or New Pope are good domain names. ListOfPopes dot net, dot org, and so on are available. Exact match searches are above 3,600+ per month.

If I were interested in these type of domain names, I would have located the Who’s is the Pope domain. For the most part, I don’t really look for these domains. I would rather focus on better domains. Even PopeHat dot org is available. It has 1,300 exact match searches per month. This domain name is more generic and potentially good for development.

Another good Pope domain registered last month – WhoIsTheNewPope.com. This is the first phrase that shows up for a “Who Is” search. Could drive plenty of traffic to the domain name.

“Am I the only one who thinks these Pope domains are a total waste of money?”

Of course they are. People waste money on a lot of things, though. This is sort of like collecting baseball cards. I’m always amused to see who gets the bragging rights when these sorts of things happen (and even more amused at Trevor’s complete misunderstanding of what Mike said above). So some guy spends $15 and gets his 15 milliseconds of fame…. there are worse things one can do, I suppose.

The planet could be an hour away from total destruction by meteor impact, and some nitwit will be trying to sell “MeteorDestroysEarth.com” on SEDO.

You people left the best one available for hand reg:

    OneLungPope.com

That will probably be gone in a minute!

How can you justify the dichotomy of huge indignation one minute over a questionable UDPR, then dozens of pope domains being registered? Don’t you see, the world unacquainted with the domain world just HATES domainers?

  34. BrianWick says

    March 15, 2013 at 11:33 am

    “world just HATES domainers?”

no the world has a very bazar way of envying domain investors – by trying and ultimately failing at being one themselves 🙂

  35. Louise says

    March 15, 2013 at 3:13 pm

Traditional Advertising is not educated as far as tech. Marketing companies don’t want to add a separate charge that they can’t control, to the final quote for a project. So they either minimize the importance of a matching dot com, or they encourage the company to steal the domain via UDPR.

What could you do with a domain like that? Besides something humor related, maybe? That’s why all these pope registrations are worthless.

By the way, as of now it’s still available.

Silliness on the part of the registrants? In any event, _questionable_ UDRPs are usually associated with generic words and phrases. Not the names of well-known people, companies, or trademarks.

Guess I was wrong! Sometimes view a term, and think, “That’s it,” but am proven wrong. However,

Would you agree the recent one – P&G vs Marchex – is brand? This is what Loic Le Meur commented

Where we will, however, never agree, is that it’s “right” that an empty page with google ads on it can squat for life a domain used by a brand like ours for good reasons. I get the “I got it first” part and understand it, but I think it’s a real shame and frankly, a pain for the whole industry.
No question some people make a business out of it, but it’s a pain.

It seems daunting to have to educate professionals in order to do business with them, P&G declining a $30,000 price tag being an example of the type of disdain for domain investors.
