Former State Rep Sells UnderTheDome.com Unknowingly For Spielberg/Stephen King Show

March 4, 2013 by Michael Berkens

Arkansasbusiness.com, just wrote a story about a former state representative Steve Harrelson, who sold the domain name of his blog UnderTheDome.com, for just $7,800 in January, to what he thought was a New York company that  was planning some kind of political site just to find out during watching the Super Bowl that the domain is the new site for CBS’ 13-part series “Under the Dome.”

Under the Dome isn’t any ordinary TV show but its one which is based on a Stephen King book and produced by Steven Spielberg

“Harrelson said he had not really been misled because the buyer, a group from Staten Island called Falsone, had always been “vague” about its plans.”But had I known ,  and CBS were behind it, I would’ve been a little more shrewd,” Harrelson said.

“Still, the price he did get wasn’t bad. Even now he describes it as “a pretty good chunk” for a domain name that he originally purchased for $100 in time for the 2007 legislative session.”

I checked out the site UnderTheDome.com and incorporating Google Maps shows you what your house looks like “Under the Dome”

Just goes to show that knowing who your buyer is and what they plan to use the name for has some weight in how you price your domain. Unfortunately you often don’t know this info. Another option that some top domainers use is to always assume your buyer has deep pockets.

Nothing compared to what happened to me with a box office domain that is now generating 400-600k traffic per month and is the new face of the one of the top box office ticket companies. I got 5% of what this legislator received. Too bad Sedo doesn’t allow the seller to see the buyer’s information.

I left a ton of money on the table, which definitely could have changed my future. The way I’m living now reinforces what I lost in this domain sale, an unethical mistake from an insurance company last year and a shady restaurant and security company that destroyed the film detrimental to the same exact case shows that you must choose the traditional route in everything you do.

Never send e-mails to inquire about canceling any type of insurance. Avoid stopping at any location while driving cross-country, no matter the location and time of day. Most importantly, never sell a valuable domain for cheap unless you know the buyer.

The domain holder got a decent price for a good domain. I’m sure he could have maximized the sale at possibly $20-25k. I don’t see this domain selling at $100k just because Spielberg and King are developing Under The Dome for CBS. How much did AMCTV pay to acquire AMC.com? AMC.com is a super name because of AMCTV and AMC movie theaters.

UnderTheDome.com at $7,800 is fair. We can’t lose sleep over missed opportunities. We learn to maximize every sale, albeit we must be in a good position to ask more. Those who with deep pockets can sit on their golden domain eggs until they hatch big money. Smaller domainers must survive, so there is little negotiation involved in the selling process.
