Who Would Have Thought .Biz Domains Will Cost More Than .Com

February 22, 2013 by Michael Berkens

In its letter to ICANN today, Neustar the operator of the .Biz registry, notified ICANN that it will be raising the wholesale cost of a .Biz domain name registration or renewal to $8.63 effective September 1, 2013

Once the increase goes into effect the wholesale cost of a .Biz registration will be higher than the wholesale cost of a .Com

Currently the wholesale price of .Biz is exactly the same amount of a .Com $7.85 .

According to the most recent monthly report filed with ICANN, the .Biz registry has 2,336,510 domain names.

The price increase of $.78 will add around $1.8 in additional revenue to Neustar the operator of the .Biz registry.

What effect do you think the price increase will have on the number of .Biz registrations going forward?

We are certainly going to keep our .biz but we already renewed it for years in advance anyway.

    Hello MHB,

My read on this is the surviving established extensions are placing bets on a total gTLD Folly unraveling. Therefore creating more demand for surviving Trusted Brand extensions. PERHAPS ?

    @ jp

As you might well know I kinda am a fan of Biz myself.

Only I prefer Biz to the left of the Dot.

Biz is a nice Brand if you are in business on the web regardless, I think you would agree ?

There are more .com than any other domain, so .com should cost less, due to economies of scale. All other gTLDs, including .net and .org should cost more.

It’s odd, but I can’t recall ever visiting a .BIZ website. I own some for defensive purposes for my more popular websites, but have wondered if it’s worth the trouble. I haven’t bothered with certain extensions like .NAME, after all.

After posting the above, I checked to see if anyone owned TheDomains.biz. Sure enough, it’s taken, and available for rent or sale. Only $69 per year, or $2000 to buy! Such a bargain, but no threat of being accidentally confused for the real .COM version of the name. 🙂

    Good Morning,
This is just my opinion and mine only, itz actually a excellent conzept, just analyzing the .BIZ make perfect sense I use .com just for communication with our world, but for the official die hard business people of our world itzz make perfect sense, nothing personal just buzinezz
