Momentous Corp, Owner Of Pool.com Applies For New gTLDs: .Sucks, .Design, .Style, .RIP

May 31, 2012 by Michael Berkens

Momentous Corp. which owns Pool.com, announced today that it has applied for 4 new gTLD’s domain name extensions.

“Some people may be surprised by the TLDs we’ve pursued,” says Rob Hall, Chairman and CEO of Momentous. “But we are confident that our applications will help to create real focus and energy for specific industries, communities and consumers online. That’s what we are after.”The four new registries for which Momentous Corp. companies have applied for are:

DotDESIGN (.design)

Operated by Design Trend Registry

The new gTLD DotDESIGN will create an online space for designers of all disciplines to communicate and collaborate. DotDESIGN is intended to be both the central hub and access point to the nature, study, development, manufacturing, sale, use and implications of a profession that has changed the way we work, live and play.

DotSTYLE (.style)

Operated by Evolving Style Registry

For consumers, entrepreneurs and institutions committed to adding style to daily life, DotSTYLE will create a new address and new tools to make it happen.

DotRIP (.rip)

Operated by Nevaeh Ventures

Our mission is to create the singular definitive venue for memorializing loved ones, places lost to time, defunct brands and out of market products. The primary focus of .rip will be on keeping memories alive. Free of any political, geographical or spiritual affiliations, DotRIP is an open top level domain with global applications.

DotSUCKS (.sucks)

Operated by Vox Populi Registry

In a free and open internet, DotSUCKS is a new domain space intended to provide a medium for sharing opinions and encouraging debate. DotSUCKS is available and applicable for personal, organizational and community use.

“DotSUCKS may be the most ambitious application,” says Hall. “When we consider product reviews, online dialog rarely satisfies the consumer who wants to be heard or the companies who are anxious to respond. The mission of DotSUCKS is to create a new space on the web that will give voice to consumers and create the opportunity for closer contact between companies their customers.”

Under the terms of the new Generic Top Level Domain program being managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, all applications for new domain extensions had to be filed by May 30th, 2012. A full list of the names being sought after is expected to be release by the organization shortly thereafter. It is estimated that upwards of 1,900 applications for new domain name extensions have been filed.

.Sucks if they do not give TM holders their domain for free will make a shed load of money.

    A SHED LOAD.

.sucks is pretty good though, should not be subject to UDRPs because its freedom of expression issue, first amendment, of course the law is totally corrupt and lawyers will find a way to get paid anyhow, cutting a domainers profits possibly to 0

I’m not making any calls on how any of the new tlds will play out or the future of .com but I will say from this story that I recognize that I have definitely underestimated the potential of the new tlds.

    Mike Mann –

From a domainers POV .Sucks is worthless IMHO as you wont be able to put ads on a domain with a TM and you wont be able to approach the TM holder to sell it however:

Every company has one person they have pissed off so much they will make it a labour of love to put the time and effort into a website that is not for profit to air their grievences against that company.

And worse, for the TM holders that may have to reg XXXX.Sucks – Not only might they have to reg their main TM they may also be in a position where they have to reg all of their products too.

Will you be buying MikeMann.Sucks? I bet you do 😉

and it would be SHOCKED if this is the only application for .sucks

  11. Joe says

.Sucks would be just like .XXX: it would cause uncomfortableness among major entities and popular individuals that would want to protect their brand.

  12. Brad says

    May 31, 2012 at 12:14 pm

.XXX provided a great business model to extort TM owners by “Protecting their brand”.

.Sucks should never be allowed to happen.

An extension that exists solely to sell defense registrations is extortion. Period.

    .SUCKS SUCKS vs .SUCK Singular

Some claim there is no such thing as BRICKS it is BRICK, even with many of them

It is surprising LONG gTLDs are selected by Applicants and also plurals

The short gTLDs are going to clean up like dotFACE—> . 🙂

I think its hilarious how these guys going after the new tlds indicate their uses…
.cloud for giving you space in the cloud
    .design for designers
Get real. These tlds will be raped at the get go by the registries themselves, followed by mass speculators while john Q public is still at the stage of suggesting that you are squatting on the generic .com you registered 10 years ago.
    remember .mobi…..for mobile use
    what a crok of crap
Oh and berkens you should change the name of your blog to the theNEWdomains of something because the entire blog seems to be more and more focused on the new tlds

  18. Dot Sucks Sucks says

    May 31, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Dot sucks sounds like a TM lawyers dream in the making.
So if I have a complaint against Microsoft and buy microsoft.sucks guess what
TM INCLUSIVE (pure squat) domain name
Loser at udrp or whatever venue of remedy is proposed
    Can I buy Microsoft.com
    .net? .mobi? .info?
What makes anyone think it would be somehow ok under .sucks
the idea is cool but executionally it will suck

I report the news in the domain industry as I comes out.

With the TAS closing last night a lot of company’s are reporting what they applied for today.

There will be more I’m sure of the next few days.

    Dot Sucks

All of these new gTLD’s will have sunrise periods where TM holders can get there TM.sucks

Beyond that don’t forget that the all new gTLD’s domain registrant are subject to a whole bunch of rules and restrictions including the Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS).

.XXX laid out the business model.

these guys are of course the front runner candidate for role of new gtld bottom-feeder. pool sets the baseline for how low we can go.

you think icm/.xxx is bad? just wait. icm are amateurs. these guys are pros.

it’ll never be approved, but .sucks would in all probability be the most successful new gtld in history. perfect extortion. they have mastered the pure sleaze domaining model. it’s almost not fair for them to be playing. they are too good.
