Sedo.com Sells Apps.net For $32K & W.TO For $52K

May 9, 2012 by Michael Berkens

Two interesting sales from Sedo this morning

The domain name Apps.net just sold for 24,100 Euro’s or about $31,330.

The seller was Branchenpresse Verlag GmbH, and the buyer is showing as the brand protection company Marksman, no doubt on behalf of a client.

The other interesting sale today is the single letter domain name of W.TO which just sold for a whopping $53K.

Back in February the domain name K.TO sold for $40K

.To is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of the island kingdom of Tonga.

K.to seems the better of the two.

Interesting.. I registered appsgmbh.com several weeks ago, without knowledge of this company, it was the only decent name I could find for an Amazon store I wanted to set up. App.com directs to Asbury Park Press, and it has to be worth a tidy sum.

    I’m not 100% convinced re: the w.to and k.to sales…

I’ve just this minute been chatting with the seller of w.to on DNF
and he says he sold it on Sedo’s Marketplace, and listed it as ‘make
    offer’.

I know Sedo’s Marketplace very well, and find it remarkable that
a $53K sale could occur in that way, and with a domain that is,
frankly, no better then any other single-letter +ccTLD name.

w.to, for example… it’s not a ‘hack’, nor is it a credible acronym
or company initials. It may be argued that ‘.to’ has some interest,
as it is a whole word, but what exactly would you use a name like
    this for?

    Another URL shortening service?…

    Anyway, I don’t buy it….

For a social website with deeeeeeep pocket, 53k is just a very small piece of cake to spend on a domain name if they need a short domain name badly for their own short URL service.

    @kuso

I agree with aspects of what you say, but I can’t see why
a co. would “badly” need w.to ($53K badly..), when there
are comparable single-letter names available at $1K or
    less.

So you also need to ask why keek.com paid 40K to buy k.to when there
are comparable single-letter names available at $1K or less. Maybe .to sounds better than others?

Single character domains are incredibly valuable, regardless of which ccTLD it is. Think big picture with a long time-line, k.to at $53,000 was probably an excellent long-term investment from a reseller perspective.

Sorry, it was w.to at $53,000
