Warning: Twitter Forgery Attack Going On

May 1, 2012 by Michael Berkens

I just received two emails in the last 1/2 both messages look like someone is sending a direct message from Twitter but in fact are trying to get you to sign into a forged site.

The emails are coming from people I follow on Twitter so it looks credible  but its not.

Here is what the email say:

“”Hey this user is making really bad things about you”

The email then has a link that it wants you to click on which goes to a twitter phishing site, twititre.com

DO NOT RESPOND TO THESE EMAILS, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK & DON’T PUT IN YOUR USER ID OR PASSWORD.

You might also want to go into your real twitter.com account and change your password I just did.

For the record the domain being used for this attack was registered in China and the registrar is XIN NET TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION.

I’ve been getting these all year, definitely picking-up the pace too, seems like I’m getting more every week.

Reminds me of all the email scams giving people viruses by tricking them into opening a random .exe file.

Thanks for putting the word out Michael!

I get lots of those as well. Definitely good to keep your antivirus software up to date. I’ve personally had good luck with a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for my laptop and PC. Both are also free which is a bonus.

If I saw an email that said that, I’d just say, “Really? Again?,” and then delete it and move on. I can’t help replying to all those Nigerian money scams, though. Maybe one will be real!

Got an email from the Better Business Bureau delineating a complaint as attachment. At first, I thought, “They’re finally coming after me,” and then realized there is no name in the greeting, and I would receive a snailmail from the BBB, so I deleted it, before opening the attachment, with extension, .exe.
