.XXX Registrations Go On Sale For Two Weeks

March 27, 2012 by Michael Berkens

It seems that the cost of registering a .XXX domain name is going on sale for a limited time at just a few registrars.

Moniker.com just announced it was reducing the price of a .XXX registration from $98 to $69 from only Match 26th- April 9th a 30% savings.

According to a press release this morning, EuroDns.com is reducing the price to 29,99 Euro’s, which is around $40 but when I went to the URL it directed me to in the email, the normal price of $98.77 was still showing.

If the EuroDNS press release is accurate it would be a savings of about 60%.

If I receive any more emails or info from registrars that are participating in the sale, I will add it to the comment section below

Off topic but the switch from MHB to your full name in your sig was inspired by Rick Schwartz’s post on branding your name a few months back, yes?

    Tony

Actually no because of the Rick Schwartz post actually do to a reprint of several articles that the ICM put out in a booklet at TRAFFIC where my name appeared as MHB while all the other authors of the cited posts where referred to by their full name.

    Michael,

Do you think this sale will help registrations?

I haven’t come across many people enthusiastic about .xxx. Personally, I stay away from adult names, but given the limited development opportunities, I don’t see .xxx hitting off big time outside of a small niche of domainers.

    Will be interesting to see.

Not much news out of ICM so far this year.

I would speculate that at this point the market has reached the saturation point with .XXX, and
any good keyword domains are long gone. the limitation on this extension and it’s failure is it only marketable to adult related enterprises – unless someone is registering their brand defensively. Besides the fact it’s 7-8 times more expensive than other extensions to register and maintain and I don’t think for that extra money, you are going to rank any higher than any other extensions. I was able to register some pretty decent keyword adult domains in the .ME extension and so far they seem to be ranking decently. I would forgo any .XXX registrations at any initial discounted price, unless it was considerable enough and I could lock in that price forward on renewals.

Same as .co, but even worse, there have been a few successful udrp which might scare some people off, and some of those defensive ones could drop.

I have heard other than the pure generic traffic has been brutal, and if this registry, is hoping domainers are going to keep them afloat, until they can establish some sort of market, they are sadly wrong. I know many long years, work, and money went into this, and they will do everything they can to make it work.

.com is still King, and .xxx is in the dungeon right about now…

As I said many times, if everyone of you just reg dot com and drop all the dot whatever, the dot com value will rise.

    What don’t you understand??

“As I said many times, if everyone of you just reg dot com and drop all the dot whatever, the dot com value will rise.”
That assume’s all of our motives.
Do you want the dot com domain prices to go up? Likely you will, since you own a few.

However, what about the initial factor which allowed you to register those domains in the first place – availability. That would indefinitely plummet making good registrations long gone.

Again, not that this would entirely be a bad thing. Just perhaps many of us are not quite satisfied with our portfolios yet – or the ability to maintain them in that event.

    Nice thought though..!

    @Eaten–
obviously you don’t own dot com –pity you.

    dot com is king!!

  12. Dummy says

    March 27, 2012 at 4:10 pm

Haha! 69. I don’t know why .xxx domains weren’t sold for $69 from the very start. That would seem to be the perfect price point for them.

  13. Eaten says

    March 27, 2012 at 4:30 pm

    Aheh, nice guess!
However, I am only speaking in theory, perhaps some of you have a limitless amount of domains.
It would seem the method that allowed you to originally obtain all of them previously wouldn’t be practical anymore. You’d have to then invest much more for each name and so forth. Are domaineers ready for that?

That is because the prices are ridiculous along with the extension that was built on fear.

  17. Ann Kuch says

    March 27, 2012 at 7:51 pm

I wouldn’t touch them at $69 or even $40. Word on the street is that the settlement will be announced sometime during the week preceeding April 17th (a court imposed date). Moreover, word has it that ICM and Manwin have negotiated the price down to twenty-something. Wait a month and get them dirt cheap.

  20. Brad says

    March 28, 2012 at 2:11 am

I excepted .XXX to flop for any number of reasons –

1.) There are limited quality keywords that fit.
    2.) The cost of registrations.
3.) The extension was not supported by the vast majority of the entire adult industry it claims to represent.
    4.) Very limited demand.

However, at this point it is like the extension was never even released.
There is no news and hardly any interest.

The only buyers seem to be the companies that were strong-armed into brand protection with the “Protect your brand” campaign.

    Brad

  21. Alan says

    March 28, 2012 at 3:51 am

The reason this extension is doing so poorly is because the adult market has been saturated for
several years now. Had .XXX came out in 2000-2003 it would have been a success imo.

  22. www.tl says

    March 28, 2012 at 4:07 am

I think that many people will say that this is a
    sign of bad times for .xxx, but it may not be;
lets see what happens with the extension in the
    next year.

ICM has to pay ICANN a $2 fee per domain so your not going to see pricing anywhere that low plus registrars have to make money are well.

  24. Ann Kuch says

    March 28, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Don’t forget their biggest expense of all. Contractually, they are required to pay IFFOR $10 per domain.

  25. ORM 101 says

I had fairly good type in traffic prior to moving one to a site. Still not great, but people are coming. It’s a one word KW niche site (LLLL) so that may be why. BUT, the others I have are not great, even my other one or two word KW niche names. We’ll see though. Most of the general population still do NOT know about .xxx or even think about it when searching That may change though, especially with the one word domains as people will know just what they’re getting when they go there (direct type in).

  26. Shane says

    March 28, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Dotxxx is on its way out. Look at the number of registrations over at Registrarstats. Only .aero and .coop do worse. And what will happen to the tld when all those trademark holders that registered a dotxxx domain as a defense measure realize they’ve been wasting their money? How many renewals will we seen then?

And recently the X-Rated Critics Organization refused sponsor funds from ICM Registry after members of the industry threatened to boycott the X-Rated Critics Organization Awards.

  27. Ulysses says

    March 29, 2012 at 4:08 am

I have been getting traffic to one of my . Xxx names, which has not been advertised anywhere.
As for the future of .xxx I would say it does have a future. Icm were given back their sponsorship donation was because of the pressure from anti .xxx domain name holders who are crying buckets and kicking their toys out of the pram. These people see .xxx as a threat and that’s the reason for all this whingeing

  28. Andy says

    March 29, 2012 at 10:46 am

    @Ulysses

You’ve got it backwards. The ones that have been pushing .xxx are domainers that hoped to make a lot of money off of them.

Adult webmasters are against .xxx, not because they fear competition, but because they don’t trust Lawley and the ICM. Go to any of the adult industry conferences, like the Phoenix Forum, and talk to some of the old timers. You’ll hear dozens of stories about backroom deals, broken promises, bribes, even threats,…

I know I wouldn’t trust a company like ICM with control over an essential part of my business: my domain names.

And the fact that ICM hired a phony like Joan Irvine and stationed her in DC only gives credence to the old rumor that ICM wants to harm the industry by lobbying to make .xxx mandatory.

  29. Ulysses says

    March 29, 2012 at 11:31 am

    @ Andy

    Thanks for the info.

That’s kinda why i invested in a few .xxx its because of lean towards a mandatory requirement.

Its a punt on my part. If and that’s a big IF .xxx becomes mandatory then the value of my small .xxx investment goes up.

As we all know there’s a long way to go on this and I look forward to the results of the icm court findings.

  30. SiteOwner says

    March 30, 2012 at 9:26 am

I have a few good quality .XXX domain names. People like to visit them and I do get some Google traffic already. The Adwords campaign delivers me returning visitors.

The adult industry is against them because they fear competition. Instead they should start using the .xxx extension themselves because people remember them easily and it makes online porn watching more acceptable. Also people will get used to searching for .xxx domains or type-ins. Now you have the choice… .com, us, net, org ..

Imagine somebody is on redtube.xxx but he wants to see gayporn. He will automatically type-in gaytube.xxx

In the next few years we will see a shift to .xxx domains, they’re cool and the new generation will be happy withit
