Afternic.com Sells $355K in Domains Led By Another LLLL.com At $12K & A Typo At $5,400

March 1, 2011 by Michael Berkens

Afternic.com changed it up again this week and now is back to reporting .com sales of only $2K or more and changed to reporting non.com domains of only $2K or more.

Afternic.com report also changed this week and put all off the domain into one list, no longer separating out the .com’s from the non-com’s:

After all the changes there were just $355K in sales reported lead by esol.com at $12K.

The strangest sale in this list is the typo, sociallite.com which shows as sold for $5,400, that a lot of money for a low traffic typo, hope the buyer knows how to spell.

Once again many of these domains fall into the, scratch my head what were they thinking? category. When I see these lists it makes me think, making sales is as much about luck of the draw as it is about having “quality domains.”

Rick Schwartz got it wrong, there is a lucrative market for Pigeon Shit.

Yes, one often wonders who buys some of these names. It doesn’t shock me that someone in the world might be willing to pay a few hundred but for $2-$3K there have to be better alternatives. Don’t most people and companies shop for the best solution within their given budget? IMO an audit should be done on some of these oddball names to see what the buyer actually does with them a year down the road.

it in turn puffs up the Total Sales for Promotion and is quick to be forgotten!

Phil Collins Can’t Stop Loving You Lyrics
    Songwriters: Nicholls, Billy

    Re-write by LAN and DEAN
(Still needs some work, but this is just a rough draft)

“So you leavin’ in the mornin’
    On the early train
Well I could say, “Everything’s all right”
And I could pretend and say, “Goodbye”

Got your DOMAIN, got your suitcase
    Got your leaving smile
Oh, I could say, “That’s the way it goes”
And I could pretend and you won’t know that I was lying

    ‘Cause ICANN stop loving you
    No, ICANN stop loving you
No, I won’t stop loving you
    Why should I?

We took a taxi to the station
    Not a word was said
And I saw you REGISTER A BAD DOMAIN
For maybe the last time, I don’t know

    Feeling humble, heard a rumble
GODADDY JUST TOOK ALL MY CHANGE
And when I hear the whistle blow
I’ll walk away AND KNOW REGISTERING THAT DOMAIN WAS ALL IN VAIN
    ‘Cause ICANN stop loving you
    No, ICANN stop loving you
No, I won’t stop loving you
    Why should I?

    (Even try)
I’ll always be here by your side
    (Why, why, why?)
I never wanted to say goodbye
    (Why even try?)
BUT HOW CAN I, WHEN YOU SPENT MY LAST DOLLAR ON THAT SORRY DOMAIN

So you leavin’ in the mornin’
    On the early train
Well I could say, “Everything’s all right”
And I could pretend and say, “Goodbye”
    But that would be lying

    ‘Cause ICANN stop loving you
    No, ICANN stop loving you
No, I won’t stop loving you
    Why should I?

    ‘Cause ICANN stop loving you
    No, ICANN stop loving you
No, I won’t stop loving you
Why should I? Why should I?
    Why should I even try?”

    Cerfs up!

Vince just telephoned and he is all excited,
he said he is getting his hair styled tomorrow for the photo shoot
    for the Album cover…

He said that theme Conventions are big right now and that when
ICANN re-schedules Africa he want’s us to sing and perform…

    Cerf ing Sufari …
    Lan and Dean style

He did also promise that we could have any MOUSE domain,
(except Mickey Mouse) of choice and free hosting and privacy.

(i suggest we don’t use Moniker as we will get ripped on
    the privacy)

Why is mailforwarding.com in all CAPS? It’s definitely the best deal of the bunch (which is not saying much). Mobilewebsites.com is also not a bad buy.

I also noticed on DNJournal that LeadsMarket.com sold for $15K last week on Sedo. I might feel buyer’s remorse hand registering that one myself.

Take home lesson: I’ve been selling for way too cheap!

  16. SL says

    March 2, 2011 at 8:08 am

@Tony: Pretty sure it’s because Afternic allows camelcase, Sedo lowercases. So whoever listed mailforwarding entered it in all caps when they typed in the initial listing (or bulk upload probably). Then this list is simply a verbatim cut from the database.

Which brings up a good (but minor) point. Camelcase looks much better when the end user is searching listings so be sure to use it when entering listings into Afternic. Obviously two and three word domains would benefit the most. There doesn’t appear to be a way to change it later in Afternic, which is weird because it almost seems like they made it a primary key…if so that’s just plain goofy schema design.

Having said that, all caps definitely made mailforwarding stand out…

  18. Jamie says

    March 2, 2011 at 10:51 am

    @Tony,

The likely reason why the domain was in all caps, because that’s the way the domain was entered into Afternic’s system by the seller.

I also agree with what John stated, the user likely purchased the domain for Social Lite.. maybe for an app or something like that. Bad for branding but so are a lot of domains that sell. 🙂

  19. Warren says

That’s a surprise on Sociallite.com. I guess it’s a typo of my Socialite.com . It is a great name (I get offers on this one almost every week) but am surprised that a typo went as high as it did.

Like others have said, Afternic is the scourge of the domain broker industry. All of those sales ending in 88 are BuyDomains domains. 90% of the remaining are BuyDomains or RareNames or whatever other company name they go by. The average joe has little to no chance of selling a domain name for a decent price because with 2.5+ million domains in their portfolio – they’re not going to push anyone elses 500 or even 1000 names. Afternic is simply not worth even getting involved with anymore. They used to be incredible but since 2006 or so, the plain old suck. And so does their online software that you use to manage your portfolio. The traffic numbers dont add up correctly and dare you ask about it gets you a “we’re working on it” email. There are bugs that I reported (dozens of them) that they’re “working on” since 2008. Not worth even mentioning them.
