Lego Joins CADNA

November 2, 2010 by Michael Berkens

We wrote back in June warning people to lay off any Lego related domains as they had at that time a filed 69 UDRP’s and had not lost one.

Kevin Murphy the other day at his blog noted that Lego was filing on average 1 UDRP every 3 days.

Today comes the news that Lego has joined the Collation Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA) along with a Lundbeck A/S a global pharmaceutical company.

This is certainly a case where abusive registrations lead to another large corporation joining CADNA, adding to their coffers for lobbying efforts.

    LEGO is another 4-Letter Brand

    There is an interesting article on a popular insider blog about how NOT to allow your 4-Letter Brand become a Top Level Domain.

    Again…”how NOT to allow your 4-Letter Brand become a Top Level Domain”

    If Lego wants a .Lego they can spend the $185K and get it.

    If someone else applies, Lego can object and the extension will most likely not be approved.

    What exactly do they “get” for $185,000 ?

    “…the extension will most likely not be approved.”
    ====

    “approved” by whom ?

    ——
    What if 4-Letter brands are already “approved” for FREE ?

    It would be nice to have DACA (Domainers Against Corporation Abuse)?

    It sure would.

    To bad domainers won’t spend the money to support anyone or any group to stand up for them

    The I* insiders have all of the “domainers'” money.

    Have you looked at all of the $500,000 per year Non-Profit salaries ?

    Also, have you considered where $56,000,000 goes for 8 million .ORG domains?

    Domainers do not run registries and they do not run ICANN.

    Yes we fund the registries but we do not get to spend the money or vote how the money is spent.

    So do all registrants, including trademark holders which are members of CADNA.

    Of course not, the people who have YOUR money believe that YOU have given THEM the mandate to do as they please, and they do just that.

    “They” really are a self-righteous, self-serving group. YOUR money empowers them. They have a unique DNA structure. Their feet do not touch the ground.
    They laugh all the way to the bank, and then do lunch.

    I really do believe that registrars should self-regulate as far as implementing some sort of meaningful technology at the user level that might warn a registrant about a potential TM name.

    Obviously, it wouldn’t be 100% efficient and its impossible for it to include all brands, but a few obvious, likely offenders might not hurt.. A little pop-up with a checkbox saying “Our Automated System has detected a possible trademark violating domain name. Your registration of MicrosoftsHotNewXBOXGame.info may contain potentially infringing keywords- Check this box to confirm you understand…” would at least put the onus back on the registrant and perhaps cause clueless newbies to stop and think or do a bit more research…

    @anon

    Registrar TnC’s already put the onus on the registrant to ensure they have the rights – playing trademark police is not the registrar’s responsibility, it’s the registrant’s responsibility to ensure they have the legitimate rights to the domains they are about to register……

    You do get to suggest to “them” where they should have their parties in the USA
    and in return YOU get to pay for those parties. Don’t expect an invite to attend.

    “They” of course can ignore your suggestions, and have their parties where they please [to suit their political agendas] and YOU still get to pay for those parties.

    “They” may allow YOU to see some pictures from their galas.

    For all of the above, you get to feel proud you supported “The Community”.

    Still not understanding you or how these comments are on the point ofnthe post.

    I’m not going to pretend I support the collection of the fees that are mandated with the registration of a domain, however the ICANN meeting if that is what you are talking about is opened to all to attend.

    There is no cost & you can attend their grand gala.

    You don’t get an invite in the mail, but if you don’t go it’s your fault, not there’s

    You have an opportunity to speak at the meeting but of course the powers to be may not listen, although ICANN did change a policy after the last meeting after several people spoke up

    @MHB

    Simple Question: How many domainers were invited to the “25 Years of .COM” gala ?

    Tougher Question: How many DNS developers were invited to the above ?

    For the record: You clearly are not aware of the numerous secretive galas where only “the right people” are invited, to spend YOUR money.

    Is mego.com a TM typo then?
    Or is a last name Legon.com a TM typo?

    All you need is sue back Lego.com and the game will stop.
