ICANN Coming To America With $2M To Spend in March 2011

September 26, 2010 by Michael Berkens

ICANN Just announced today that it will be holding its next meeting after Colombia in December 2010, in San Francisco in March 2011.

According to the announcement ICANN will have a budget of just short of $2 Million to spend on the March meeting:

“”Resolved the Board approves San Francisco, California as the location of the ICANN 2011 North America Meeting to be held from 13-18 March 2011, with a budget not to exceed US$1.941M”

Sounds like it should be a party, I mean very expensive meeting.

Party or not, this is the opportunity for all US domainers to get involved.
Some of us have participated in ICANN for a long time, but not many.
If you have never been to an ICANN meeting, I implore you to attend.
Go to the different group meetings, speak up, be heard.

The irony of all of this is that ICANN is funded completely by REGISTRANTS – the very group that really has no direct input into ICANN.

Show up. Step up. Be heard.

They also announced that the time to respond to a URS would be reduced from 20 days to 14 days. Be careful about taking a 3 week vacation if you own a desirable domain name….

$2million for a meeting??? Must be one wild party.

Will there be a domain fest at that time???

What’s also amusing is that they’re going to remove the reference to “terrorism” in the background checks. Former cybersquatters can’t get a new gTLD. Terrorists? No problemo. 🙂

“ICANN is funded completely by REGISTRANTS”
    ===

ICANN would likely claim they are funded by Verisign, Registrars, and “contracted parties”. Yes, the money may come from Registrants, but thru an agent.

For many Registrants, their money comes from advertisers & end-users. Those groups are even further removed from ICANN.

Who really “owns” your domain names ?

  8. MHB says

    September 26, 2010 at 9:58 pm

George is correct on the response front:

“URS timing: In response to public comment, change the time to respond to a complaint from 20 days to 14 days , with one opportunity for an extension of seven days if there is a good faith basis for such an extension.”

The costs are kept LOW because it is all Non-Profit Public Benefit.

Also, local and global sponsors help to host the meetings.

In honesty to the truth, they say “a budget not to exceed US$1.941M”, it does not mean they will spend $2 Million dollars, it means that is their top budget, it could as well be that the meeting costs $1.

As long as they are transparent with their finances, I think it is ok.

  12. MHB says

    September 27, 2010 at 10:09 am

    Hacker

I bet the actual cost comes much closer to the $1.941M than to $1

The figure for the budget came from previous meetings

  13. Meyer says

    September 27, 2010 at 10:30 am

That figure does not include all of the private parties.

Since, SF is the home of the west coast office of Verisign*.
plus the home office for Google, Yahoo and many other major internet
related companies, there should be a lot of VIP parties, tours, etc.

Michael, when you attended the last Icann meeting, did you
    attend any private parties?

George, do you plan on attending the SF meeting?

Attend the ICANN meeting: Register in time at http://meetings.icann.org/ once the website for SF is up: Typically during the Cartagena Meeting (5-10 December 2010). Then go there, it is for free!

Attend the dotGay-Party (no tea allowed, strict enforcement, t-scanners at the gates): That party will be announced at the meeting, and at http://www.twitter.com/dotgay. If anyone wants to be double-sure: Send a message to “party-icann-sf@dotgay.com”

    Well Mike,

be careful! A famous Eagles song says “You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave! “, and what they really meant wasn’t California, it was ICANN (how did they knew about ICANN in 76?).

You start to go there just for fun (I started mid 2004) and then eventually you start to fantasize about changing the DNS and all.

Hope to see some of you guys also at the Cartagena ICANN in December, that’s a holiday destination and everybody should REALLY have some fun!

    ===

The ISOC and ICANN Meeting is split in two.
The “Trailer Park Trash” is headed to Colombia.
The Upper Echilon Elites meet that same week in San Francisco to plan March 2011.

Check out the ICANN web-site new material (spin)…

    “Why are the meetings important?
“This is where Internet policy is born, formed, and decided. ICANN’s meetings are an integral part of the multi-stakeholder model as they provide an arena for global collaboration on important issues affecting the Internet’s naming and numbering systems. They are a testament to the bottom-up, consensus driven model that Internet Governance is based on – overseen by the world, for the world.”

I am new to this, when we say budget is around 2 Million is it only for covering members expenses that ICANN pay for, meeting rooms… or more please?

  31. MHB says

    December 14, 2010 at 5:28 am

ICANN sets a budget for renting the convention center, traveling and housing expenses for staff, the costs of the gala and “music night”, transportation that is provided for attendees from their hotel to the meeting room and such.

All attendees have to pay their expenses to attend although ICANN does not charge admission

  32. George Kirikos says

    December 14, 2010 at 9:33 am

There’s an ICANN gravy train — *many* of the attendees have their expenses (travel, hotel, and per diems) paid for by ICANN (e.g. those on “fellowships”, staff, Board members, many in the ALAC, and many in the GNSO). They don’t want to get off the gravy train, and now the GAC wants to get on it too!

  33. Alexander Schubert says

    December 15, 2010 at 8:52 am

While that is certainly true, the majority has their trips paid for by their company, government, etc. And many have to pay everything themselves! I paid many, many of my 19 ICANN meetings out of my own pocket, and I tell you: IT BURNS A BIG HOLE! And ICANN makes addictive. Ask Mike (if he has recovered from the horror flight back to Miami)…..

Isn’t kidding about the flight back to Miami.

After the 3 searches for 1 1/2 hours, the 45 minutes standing waiting for the doors to open, the 1 hour still on the plane waiting for it to take off in light rain, even though there was no lightning, when it took off in the rain, the turbulence for at least 1/2 the flight that keep all stewards in their seat.

For a flight that was suppose to be 2:30 hours it was a 6 hour ordeal from start to finish

  35. Ali Ahmad says

    December 19, 2010 at 2:49 am

Thanks all, but seems still very big number unless I was staying in less expensive hotels and flying cheaper flights, this number for me I think can cover more than 200 person and I do not think ICANNpaying for this many!
