Google Instant Doesn’t Like Adult

September 10, 2010 by Michael Berkens

One of the early observations many have made about Google Instant is that is doesn’t seem to like adult terms.

Unlike non adult terms that start showing search results as you type as well as offering your suggested search terms, when you type in an “adult” term Google Instant doesn’t make suggestions or show results.

Try typing in the “f” word , no suggested results or suggested terms.

Try typing in the group pussy cat dolls slowly and you will see no suggested results.

So whatever effect Google Instant will have on search patterns it won’t effect adult.

Michael, does it make a difference if safe search is on/off?

I can understand why Google wouldn’t want to “suggest” adult terms if someone is actually typing in a non-adult term. That could be a PR nightmare.

I am pretty sure this was like that before as well with just suggest on G. It never “suggested” anything adult related.

It never suggested other search terms, however Google Instant is a new feature and it doesn’t show search results as you go for adult

You want your kids to find online p0rn by typing “adult”?

Those who want p0rn will find it on their own without Google’s help.

The real impact is on the value of long tail domains and keywords for ppc. G now short cuts and produces organic and ppc results for the concise search phrase. This means fewer cheap clicks from long tail search phrases, which are less expensive, and can make up 30% of traffic for sponsored search efforts.
