This Weeks Top .CO Land Rush Domain Auctions Starting Now

August 20, 2010 by Michael Berkens

Here is the second installment of the .CO Land Rush application starting the week of August 19th.

You can see last weeks here (many of these auctions are still running)

The number next to the domain, indicates how that particular domain ranks out of the 250 .CO domains haing the Most Land Rush Applications as reported to me by the .CO registry.

So for example, topping this most “Land Rush .CO domains”, is the hack,  Tobac.co which ranks number 4 out of the 250 with the most Land Rush Applications.

There are some great domain names on this list including 2 Colorado Cities, Aspen.co and ColoradoSprings.CO (boulder.co is currently in auction with a high bid of $1,700), 3dTV.co, (check out our post on 3D domains) Tshirt.co (look at the domainfest auction results).

“Tobac.co which ranks number 4 out of the 250 with the most Land Rush Applications”

I find this extremely improbable. This makes very little sense to me that so many apps would be filed for a hack of an obscure extension of an industry that has nearly collapsed in the USA.

I don’t see Tobac.co anywhere near the potential quality of the others listed on the page. Something phony at play here.

Will there be posts of the final sales prices for these domains?
Anyone taking guesses on what these names will end at?

    Hi M.,

Do you think you could post some results from the auctions. I know quite a fewe people who would be interested in knowing. It would be interested to know how much betting.co went for…

  13. Dennis says

    August 21, 2010 at 7:52 am

Yes these are nice domains, but I’m suprised that you guys registered English domains and nothing else. I understand that .co stands for Corp, COmpany…but it is before all the Columbian TLD.

I went rather on Spanish names and succeeded to register http://www.timbres.co (ringtones) and http://www.encuentros.co (meetings, datings), and missed some good ones such as café.co…

My records show I passed on buying DenverCo.com for $3K in 2004.
I guess I made the right decision with all the “.co” geniuses that have come out of the woodwork overnight.

  18. BrianWick says

    August 21, 2010 at 11:35 am

Regarding the Colorado domains and state abbreviations like CO,
When I sold BoiseIdaho.com for $175K about 2.5 years ago, the buyer had no use for BoiseID.com – but I threw it in.

  19. MHB says

    Brian

So you see no value in denver.co, vail.co or aspen.co?

  20. BrianWick says

    August 21, 2010 at 11:59 am

    per MHB question…
As you know, I am a Denver native and keep my office & home in the heart of Downtown Denver.
I feel there is absolutely no value in Denver.co, Vail.co, Aspen.co other than getting some sucker new the the .com (oops .co) Internet space to buy them because they can’t get the .com – all this absolutely no differnet than why someone buys some other non.com.

I respect there seems to be some kind of “.co” support group on these threads – but that support group won’t put sustained food on the table friends.

Mike, Trina and I are looking forward to seeing you and your bride at Traffic in South Beach.

  21. David says

    August 21, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Completely disagree with Brian on this, as geo colorado domains ending in .co are HIGHLY brandable.

  23. Jim Holleran says

To me it makes no sense to register a english name in .co. I am not a developer so maybe that is thing. The spanish names would be a better bet.

  25. Slate says

I sold Touchscreens.co. I would like to thank everyone for the kind comments on this blog regarding my sale on Sedo.

Does anyone know where these landrush auctions are taking place? I hear that some are still running and some are about to begin.

I have several other .co names such as Cuss.co, Homeschools.co, Situps.co, Crunches.co, ComputerScreen.co, ChicagoIllinois.co, Debtors.co, Secluded.co and several others including 28 3 letter ones. It has been fun. Thanks and happy domaining to everyone!!!

  27. faceless says

    August 21, 2010 at 11:06 pm

So what did the closed auctions go for? I haven’t seen ANYTHING yet! Wow, what a boring extension.

No one is talking. Even on closed auctions. I’ve seen one price so far for .co at auction an that was in the comments here. WTF?

Cointernet knew how to launch but doesn’t know how to keep the interest growing. I’m bored already. Snooze.

  28. BrianWick says

    August 22, 2010 at 6:48 am

Tobac.co reminds me why I dropped Ci.gs years ago.

Looks like Touchscreens.co is used as a defensive typo domain to capture traffic from the owner of the .com – nice sale I suppose but for the wrong reasons – I do not think the buyer will be happy.

On that note I reserved CapitolHill.co as a defensive typo going back a month and have not received a single typin yet considering the .com gets 20+ organics a day.

  29. em says

    August 22, 2010 at 7:43 am

    Brian,

This is another trite word, defensive, being bandied about by .com protectionists. Hey, I have my share of .coms as well but understand that.co is a new company and has nothing to do with .com. Its still a shame people who were burned in the past cant get up on their horse again and do it better this time. Monopolies arent good for the economy anyway. It would be nice to see .me and .mobi with some added success.

  30. MHB says

    August 22, 2010 at 9:52 am

    Brian

Out of all due respect, you can’t look at a domain like CapitalHill.com which gets 20 visitors a day and CaptialHill.co which gets none and conclude that .co don’t get any traffic leakage.

.Co domains do get raffic leakage but you have to look at .com sites with HUGE traffic before you get going to find any meaningful traffic on a .co.

    You want an example?

    Sure

    YouJizz.co is getting 1,500 visitors a day.

The .com is the 150 busiest site on the net according to Alexa and gets over 3.5 million visitors a month according to Complete.

  31. Domo Sapiens says

    August 22, 2010 at 9:56 am

There is something “Fundamentally” wrong when people are buying/registering .co’s for the traffic bleed expectation (known to have terrible CTR’s/CPM’s) , yes I have done it.

Nevertheless good luck to all playing it.

  32. BrianWick says

    August 22, 2010 at 10:39 am

    Yes Mike –
Per your example where YouJizz.com gets approximately 3 million visitors a month according to SiteAnalytics.Compete.com, YouJizz.co gets 1500 per month. That means 1 typo in for every 2000.

And where Touchscreens.com get 8,000 visitors a month, that suggests 4 would key in Touchscreens.co. My business model does not support that – and I drop that stuff.

My SpaceBook.com lately has been getting 18000-20000 per month (and that is pure organic traffic) suggesting that SpaceBook.co should be getting 10 typeins (or typos) a month and it does not even show up on the radar at siteanalytics.

Bottom line is yes there will be typos but far the exception than other typos that might occur 1 in 20 or 1 in 50.

I dont buy it – sorry mike.

    Bri

  33. MHB says

    Brian

1st of all I said youjizz.co was getting 1,500 visitors a DAY not a month.

2nd I’m not asking you to “buy it” or buy anything.

I’m just saying based on 20 visitors a day, 600 a month and 7200 a year you might get 1 visitor to the .co a year.

    UPDATED

I have now published some results from the 1st closed land rush auctions:

  35. BrianWick says

    August 22, 2010 at 10:59 am

My internal stats vs. SiteAnalytics.Compete.com are generally very true where they suggest YouJizz.co at 1500 a month vs. your internal numbers of 1500 day.

The same service has FoxNews.com at 10M per day and FoxNews.co at 4K a day – about 1 in 2500. I tested several other high volume domains as well.

I will stick with a .co getting a typin 1 in 2000 on average until someone else provides significant support suggesting otherwise.

At this point I am going to YouJizz.com and teach myself a lesson I will never forget.

  36. snicksnack says

    August 22, 2010 at 7:52 pm

As Michael owns the domain, I think he knows best was the traffic numbers for youjizz.co are. We have several .Co domains and they have a decent amount of traffic. Not all website with a high alexa or compete will have good type in traffic for the .Co, as some of them get most of their traffic from backlinks, ads, affiliate programs…. business.co in my opinion would have less than 20 visitors a day on average.

tobac.co is set to end on Sep 1st. There are 26 potential bidders, so far only 5 have placed a bid and it’s under $1000.

  41. Codomena says

    September 3, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I strongly believe there is great future value in CO domains and the “CO” association with Colorado ads extra value. I would not be suprised to see in the long run for many existing Colorado related web sites to gradually migrate to CO extension, or even abandon the original domains.

  42. BrianWick says

    September 3, 2010 at 10:15 pm

    Per Codomena:
“CO” association with Colorado ads extra value”

As I try to understand this viral .co cult, does this mean that SanFrancisco.CA adds the same value to to Canadian TLD ? SanDiego.CA, LosAngeles.CA……

    – or does it simply add confusion as to what .ca and .co stand for – and further reinforce the true and only brand of the Internet – the “.com” ?

That said, I have owned as many as 24,200 “.com”s and now own less than 7,000 simply because I decided years ago to keep only those that have a decent chance of true intuitive brandability (i.e. Billboard domains)

Which is better on a billboard:
DenverCO.com (Not me or I would have bought it for $3K years ago)
    or
    Denver.CO
    or
Denver.Colorado (coming soon to the next bunch of suckers)
    or
    DenverColorado.com
