Report: Apple To Reveal Next “Big Thing”: iAd (No It Doesn’t Own The Domain)

March 29, 2010 by Michael Berkens

According to  Online Media Daily, Apple is preparing to announce its “next big thing”,  a new personalized, mobile advertising system that could well be called the “iAd”

The new ad platform, which will be officially unveiled to Madison Avenue on April 7th, has been described as “revolutionary” and “our next big thing” by Apple chief Steve Jobs.

It is believed the mobile ad platform has been built on top of Quattro, the mobile advertising developer Apple acquired in January for nearly $300 million.

Apple’s iAd is expected to offer location-based advertising that would enable advertisers to target ads to consumers based on their geographic proximity despite that Google recently won the patent for a systems that serve ads dynamically based on a user’s location.

On the domain front Apple does not appear to own iad.com, iad.net or .iad.org, although .iad.com and iad.net are parked pages while iad.org is owned by the Saudi Embassy.

If this announcement is made and iAd is the direction Apple chooses to go, it will be a very good day for the owner of iad.com.

locationbasedadvertising.com goes to a parked page as well but  the whois record states this “domain is not for sale”

Interesting. I have been following location based services in general for about ten years… right after I bought my Palm VII. Anybody remember those? It was the iPhone of its day.

There is a “location services” feature on the iPhone and Apple has enough location apps so this could get them some of the Google ad revenue.

Would be a great move by Apple. A crowing achievement as though he doesn’t have enough of those.

ipad.com … nexusone.com … iad.com … why the big companies so often forget to register their most important domains?

    LCD

Its not they failed to register the domains, they were registered long before the companies had the idea for the product, the question is why don’t they go out any buy the domains for what is for them a drop in the bucket, prior to leaking the information.

“locationbasedadverting.com goes to a non-resolving page and the whois record states this ‘domain is not for sale’ ”

It resolves to a Fabulous parking page.

    GeoBasedMarketing.com and
    GeoBasedAdvertising.com were available though.

    .

off topic but interesting (and good for a post)

reading TheeNextWeb I’ve found a Venture Capital company that uses the .vc TLD for its website

    ht
    tp://www.hatchery.vc/

it is the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ TLD

    ht
    tp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.vc

so, now, all Venture Capital companies can use it as the “own” TLD… 🙂

Hopefully a nice pay day for the owner.

Has anyone watched undercover boss. Looks like this show is going to be a big hit this year. Now does anyone know why they did not buy the domain name undercoverboss.com or the .tv version.

Domain names are going to be worthless very soon with all the new technology coming out.
Apple is not stupid..if they wanted a certain domain, they would have got it…but they don’t really need it. iPhone is a huge success…still not much traffic on iPhone.com…they don’t really need it.
Domain values are going down from here..mark this post…I know inside info.

true, since (e.g.) the nexusone.com (“lucky”) owner still hasn’t sold its domain to Google

there are many domains thas “seem” be a “must have” for big companies but that, the latter, never want to buy

People will find the correct domain eventually. A great domain is nice, but any domain will do. I can find pepsi.com just as easy as I can find softdrink.com . I can also find the big button for iAd on Apple’s main site just as easy as I can type in iAd.

but, probably, Apple will call its ad company with a different name

This technology took off in 2009. It is the future for targeting consumers and their money. The most important issue at hand with this technology is the violation of privacy for consumers. There are a whole lot of them who do not want to be ad targeted or tracked by their locations.

I imagine new laws will be passed to protect consumers with this new technology.

On a different note, we purchased GeoAdvertising.com a few years back for $1,000. What a bargain. Skip is using it as a platform to serve ads in his Geo Domain Network. Im pretty sure the value of the domain has increased in value as this technology is becoming mainstream.

Keep up the good work MHB.
