From A Press Release: Mafia.com HITS the Marketplace: Hey Guys Was That Best Choice Of Words?

March 22, 2010 by Michael Berkens

I Caught this press release today by a company named, VipMedia announcing that it’s been “selected to handle the sale of yet another premium domain name, Mafia.com.

The Press release goes on to say:

“This prized URL – owned by the same party since 1995 – is brand new to the market and will likely be among 2010’s landmark domain sales.”

“We are pleased to be the exclusive broker for this premium web property,” said VipMedia CEO Cory G. “A phenomenal and immediately brandable name for online gaming, publishing or ecommerce, we expect Mafia.com to attract some significant six-figure offers,” he added. “We’re marketing the name far and wide, advising prospective buyers to make us an offer we can’t refuse.” VipMedia says Mafia.com’s owner agreed to put the name on the market after fending off dozens of unsolicited bids over the course of the last decade.””

“”Based in South Florida, VipMedia is a web development, traffic optimization and domain brokerage company. ”

Now I’m no expert at writing a press release but you got to think there is a better saying to announce the sale of the domain Mafia, other than saying “its HITS the marketplace.”

Also If your going to quote the CEO of your company in a press release maybe you should use his full last name.

A CEO of a company going by the name of “Cory G”, doesn’t exactly inspire the type of confidence you might want when bidding on a “landmark domain”.

Finally when you say your company has  “been selected to handle the sale of yet another premium domain name” maybe you should mention at least one other such premium domain that you brokered.

Gangsters.com sold on Ebay for $16k about 3 months ago, so I would say mafia.com will be around waiting to sell for 6 digits for a long time.

Ho-hum. Yet another domainer over-valuating his assets and services.

More proof (aside from your blog) that this industry is just full of wannabees and daydreamers.

I guarantee this does not hit 6 figs. Like another poster said, it’s not a far cry from the Gangsters.com domain, which sold for 16k. Wish him luck though.

I bet it gets a lot of fall over traffic from mafiawars. They have 30 million players.

“I guarantee this does not hit 6 figs.”

All of the people saying it wouldn’t sell for 6 figures are the same people that would ask 6 figures for it if they owned it.

It only takes one buyer willing to pay the price.

Every month we see domains that sold for high prices that caused us to scratch our head in wonderment.

As domainers, it is our nature to be lowballers.
    Buy low, sell high.

I can tell you that the owner of Gangster.com never completed the sale, he backed out from the deal.

could killers.com cocaine.com (and similar domains) have a market value? 🙂

    .

but Gangster.com can be a domain good for a game with the same name

well – the press release sid EXACTLY what it is meant to do – GET PRESS COVERAGE.

in looking at the forest (instead of one tree) the owner of mafia.com did get YOU TO WRITE about the domain being for sale, so while you guys debate the value in a little corner of the world, perhaps the x # of people who read this will forward the info to someone who sees the ACTUAL end value in the name………. and possibly a sale!

as the saying goes “i dont care what you say about me as long as you spell my name correctly”

very poor figure if we consider the number of criminals in the world… but probably the world’s mafias don’t like to surf the web… 🙂

Well, get your checkbooks ready, I spoke with the broker and its well in the 6 figure price range. Not sure if someone will pay that much. I personally would of gone $50 large max and I still wouldn’t know what to do with the domain in terms of development or monetize.

Maybe use as a personal email?

    ForHire@Mafia.com ?
    ProtectionServices@Mafia.com
    NotItalian@Mafia.com

    or perhaps even Consultant@Mafia.com :-p

Six figures sounds high for this domain.

Its a domain like terrorist.com which failed to sell with a reserve in the 5 figures at one of the live domain shows earlier this year.

Your right what do you do with such a domain?

  25. LCDwallpapers.com and LCDscreensavers.com says

“Six figures sounds high for this domain.”

unless it will be acquired by one of world’s mafias to avoid the use of the domain against them…

  26. Attila says

    March 24, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Some people just don’t get it. They think just because they own a great name dot com, they can ask an insane amount. Unfortunately if the name can not be used for business or monetizing that will make that investment or ROI back within 2-5 years, then you can not ask for so high price.

Like you said Terrorist.com – what could you do with it? Make a portal website how the americans kicked their triggery finger / self exploding butts?

Though their promise of paradise and unlimited virgins sounds promising. Hope for them there is no fine print in the contract that says the virgins are really guys!!!
