Google: Chrome Market Share To Double Every Year

September 16, 2009 by Michael Berkens

Google rolled out a new version of its Chrome browser today, Chrome 3.0

One year ago Google Chrome was launched and now has a  market share of 2.8%.

However, Chrome Engineering Director Linus Upson has much bigger goals for the browser expecting that its market share will double for at least the next couple of years

“If at the two-year birthday we’re not at at least 5%, I will be exceptionally disappointed. And if at the three year birthday we’re not at 10 percent, I will be exceptionally disappointed,”  he said.

He noted the internal goals are even more aggressive than doubling share every year.

Google also announced a Mac version of Chrome will be out by the end of the year.

Doubling of market share for the next few years seems like a lofty goal, which in my opinion, can only be reached if the browser comes pre-installed on new computers.  Google has made a deal with Sony to have certain of its computers to pre-installed with Chrome, but unless Google can get widespread deals with major manufactures  to pre-install, its going to be tough.

I use Firefox. (which Google supports financially)

I would suspect by mid 2010 – Google will annouce a partnership with a leading computer manufactuer to pre-install Chrome, I wouldnt be surprized to see Acer or Dell having it pre-installed.

No proof here, just my two cents.

    @ Robbie:

They’ve already announced a deal as mentioned above.

I actually just “semi-switched” to Chrome after seeing the new release. It’s not exactly my cup of tea, but it just runs so much better than Firefox (and IE8) on my computer. Firefox has been nothing but annoying ever since they released 3.5… crashes NUMEROUS times per day while all the other browsers don’t, but I have just gotten so accustomed to FF.

I’d love to “break away”… even tried to move to Opera. We’ll see!

I’m using Chrome right now 🙂

I find Chrome to be the fastest web browser out right now. FireFox is still my default browser and the one I use the most. I’ve been using Chrome more and more because FF keeps freezing up on me.

Chrome, Firefox or Safari are using the same back-end of scripts. They just customize the look and feel, added extra features and security.

    Prepare to be exceptionally disappointed.

    Just in case:

Anyone know if it’s possible to move Bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome?

@Patrick McDermott – I know it’s possible, just don’t know how I did it, lol.

Chef Patrick says: “I know it’s possible, just don’t know how I did it, lol.”

Chef, what were you drinking when you did it?

    Just kidding. 🙂

Actually I know to do a Google search for “move Bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome” which I just did.

I thought I’d just ask here to contribute to the thread and in case someone else has already done it.

The Google search brought this first result from Yahoo Answers below.

It seems to be written by someone whose primary language is not English but it’s understandable so I’ve left it as is:

    “first u install google chrome..
after installin when u will first tym open it, i dailogue box will apperar asking for whether u want 2 export bookmarks……
so u click on yes n select mozilla..firefox option”

    Bingo!!!

@Patrick McDermott: Yes, there is an “Import data” function. Its location has changed between Chrome 3 and Chrome 4, so depending on what version you have, you will need to look either in the Tools menu or inside the Options.
