Google Is Changing Its Search Algorithm: Will “Caffeine” Impact PPC?

August 15, 2009 by Michael Berkens

Google is undergoing a major change to its organic search algorithm, which it has labeled “Caffeine”.

According to the official Google announcement :

“”””For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions.””

Google is now asking for developers to give feed back.

“””The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.””

Click here and you Can do a side by side comparison between caffeinated results with de-caffeinated results.

When I search for luxury bedding using the side by side tool, luxurybedding.com winds up #2 under the “caffeinated” results while it was not on the first page using “old Google”

Discountbedding.com is #1 under both the new and old Google, for the search term, discount bedding.

The good news, if the comparison engine is correct, is that parked domains will continue to come up first if you search for complete domain such as triallawyers.com

Knowing nothing about programming, this is as much as I’m going to be able to help you understand what this might mean for site placement on Google, SEO work and PPC results.

However, here are some links to articles written about this project and possible ramifications.

You guys should check some of these out,  as it seems this may be a big deal:

After checking these out let me know how you think Google Caffeine will effect parked and developed domain names PPC and SEO

Google has multiple data centers…so I am not sure that the tool really provides an accurate sampling, plus their search results are very fluid….Aaron Wall wrote about Googles shift to promoting brands… for example type in insurance or credit cards and see how banks and big insurance companies are now most of the first results…In short, Google is making it harder for seo sites to dominate top key words and is trying to move the consumer one step closer to the actual product, a tough pill to swallow for those of us trying to make money in the middle…so for now the best bet seems to be focussing on local and long tail results, an area where more consumers are navigating towards….

The one thing I like about google is that they work to try to improve the search results for the end user…you have to wonder why ask.com even bothers to try and promote their search engine, their results are pathetic and so filled with sponsored link advertising

I tried the link to the comparative search but I didn’t see much of a difference.

“miami real estate” and “miami condos” of course,
I tried “insurrance” in the end but I would have expected something huge from Google
