No remote bidding is a dirty shame for those sellers…talk about severely limiting your chances.

Ok, maybe it is just me…again. But did anyone else submit some domains that they thought were amazing that Moniker didn’t?
I do have some domains in the auction… but I am amazed that they chose the ones they did and passed over some better domains…
I am curious if others feel the same. Would it be innappropriate for us to list 5 domains on your blog that were passed over and see what other people think?
Just curious…. I did come down on my reserve price when asked – so that can’t be the issue….

I sell my own domain names now, I think that if a great great deal came along that they would not list it first on there auction platform. Don’t get me wrong, you can get good deals at these auctions., but if a great deal came along they would try to buy it first for themseleves at a later time like the next week. It’s just the way it is. They run the show so they get first pickings. You have think that they probably see 100k plus domain names coming through:) how nice would it to be to cherry pick.

The people holding these auctions are also buyers so if there is an oustanding deal availabe I doubt we will get to see it.

    @Don,
I don’t think they are cherry picking for themselves.. their whole reputation would be on the line..but I am wondering if their algorithims or metrics that they use are missing some gems???
Do you use an auction service or are you pitching to end-users?

Ok, Kelly so what are the names they rejected that you believe are gems?

Welcome to the head-scratching world of domain auctions, Kelly.

This is nothing new; and will never change.

O’ course, it’s in imperfect markets like domains–of which auctions play a part–where; if you know what you’re doing; the greatest profits lie…

    Try buying stock one day for $100, $1,000, or $100,000 . . . and flipping it 1-12 months later for $250, $2,500, or $250,000.

Short of stock manipulation; or getting in on an IPO, is virtually impossible.

Domains? Happens a lot . . . though, to be fair; as a percentage of total names for sale at any given time; the number of such high-profit flips is far closer to 1/10th of 1% than 1% of the available resale inventory.

    @kelly

End user is way to go. You will always get more $ just need to find the buyer. It just takes more work. Auctions are great for buying though selling your names on them is ok for the person that does not want to take the time to contact end users. I am not pointing out that any certain auction service cherry picks but I am sure a few may do it, greed is always there in any business. I have had a few on auction services though they where names under 5k. If its over 10 to 15k its worth it to contact end users but everyone is different and has a different portfolio and opinion. Example I like refinancing.net 5k to 10k reserve, but if they hit an end user or any bank in the US or esp outside the US with the way the euro is they would get more cash.

    Guys

I don’t think moniker is picking out names, not to list, so they can acquire those domains themselves.

We have had many names selected for the live auction in the past, many sold, some did not, but at no time did we ever get an offer for names that were not selected from moniker or any third party

    Kelly

I see nothing wrong with listing some of the domains you submitted that were not selected along with domains you submitted that were selected and see if anyone, including ourselves, have any comments on them.

    Guys

We sell domains at auction to domainers and to end users through mostwanteddomains.com

They are not mutually exclusive and some names that sell at one market will not sell at the other.

The secret is to figure out which is which and what is the proper price.

Your not always going to get the best possible price everytime.

If you traded stocks you are never going to sell at the all time high and buy at the all time low.

    Same here.

Any.biz – this domain is a great buy

  12. admin says

Funny at the last TRAFFIC show attorney.biz went for $2,500, very lightly bid.

Other really good .biz got no bids at all

Now all of a sudden .biz is getting hot

    Alright,
    Be gentle with me…

These are few that are in the auction:
    http://www.AnswerOurprayer.com
    http://www.BlessThisPlace.com
    http://www.IndecentProposition.com
    http://www.MerchantCreditCardService.info

Now, I am not saying that these are not great domains, I am just wondering why these and not:

    http://www.3DWorldNetworks.com (a network of 3D related domains)
    http://www.ClinicalTrialsSite.com
    http://www.MersaVirus.com (MRSA/Mersa Staph)
http://www.SpeedOfVirtual.com (check out Googles News for this phrase.. Perfect tag line for their virtual wimax…)
http://www.HighLimitRoom.com (Every casino in the world has one..)
http://www.ScannerAd.com (Think mobile phone application. It is happening now.)
    http://www.MobiDemographics.com
    http://www.AppDemographics.com
    http://www.SafeSpringBreakTrips.com http://www.StaphCure.info
    http://www.VegasTournamentSchedule.com (poker, slot etc..)
http://www.VintageRVSales.com ( I also have Yacht and Jet available)
    http://www.WiHelp.com
    http://www.WiPortable.com
    http://www.witoys.com
    http://www.PayBillsToday.com
    http://www.PayLoansOff
    http://www.0RateCreditCard.com

    Remember,
I was very flexible in lowering my reserve price when asked because once they are in the auction the market takes over and determines a fair value.
I wouldn’t take a chance at “No reserve” because on the silent auction I have seen domains sell for a lot less than I would be will ing to sell for. I would rather wait 6-12 months and develop the domain more and see what happens.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can give me some feedback. I also will check out MostWantedDomains.com – thanks!

    @Kelly:

I feel you Kelly, I wouldn’t mind my domains not getting listed if it wasn’t for the total CRAP that always makes it in with high reserves that won’t sell.

Ironically, I actually got a couple listed in the extended auction this time around…the two weakest ones that I submitted! Sheesh.

    I ain’t complaining though.

  15. Germ says

    May 8, 2008 at 10:08 am

    @ Kelly:

    I like your MersaVirus.com, WiToys.com & WiHelp.com but I think the others may be a bit long.

WIHelp.com could be a municipal site for Wisconsin.

    Also, HighLimitRoom.com is a great 3 worder.

  16. Kelly Lieberman says

    May 8, 2008 at 10:08 am

I also don’t want to slap the hand that feeds me. (! )
I am grateful, just left wondering.

    Kelly

    Ok for my 2 cents

    HighLimitRoom.com

Like this one. Know that moniker hold a gambling domain auction at a show dedicated to gambling websites, maybe they are holding this one back for that

    VegasTournamentSchedule.com

    same comment as above

I personally don’t like any of the others but do like the ones that were selected so I think they got it right

  18. Steve M says

    May 8, 2008 at 11:34 am

    Kelly; gently…I like just HighLimitRoom.

The “Wi” ones are high-risk TM names for the Wii gaming system; in spite of lacking one “i.”

MERSA is a bacteria; not a virus.

Best wishes on the four they did take; though not interesting to me personally.

  19. Greg Nelson says

Kelly – HighLimitRoom.com is the only one I like as well. It is easy to view constructive criticism as ridicule or insult, but I believe most serious domainers believe that “yes, maybe these names have some value, but I can find the same number of domains of this quality or better every day from drop-lists.” The only 2 exceptions I see to this are highlimitroom.com and vegastournamentschedule.com.

Why do so many of us believe this if it is in fact true? Because names with no direct nav traffic have little built-in value as domains with no direct nav that become brands and SEO are built and can be attained in most markets on various alternatives of names.

That said – I think it is very cool you shared the list and as you openly admit, set yourself up for many to critique/judge you. I think it will provide good insight into how others think in the industry.

Dusting off a bit.. Thanks for being gentle, this can be a harsh business.
The “wi” ones were short for wireless, like wi-fi. I hope they can’t UDRP for that.. I have quite a few of those.
Hopefully, you are right and Moniker is holding back my casino related domains for the next gaming auction. Maybe it will be in Las Vegas so I can attend my first live auction and get a feel for it.
I am going to start working on targeting some businesses that may need a domain like IndecentProposition.com and the others and see what happens.
    I appreciate the comments!
