Another 7 Figure Domain Name Sale? Futbol.com is Sold

July 27, 2015 by Jamie Zoch

GoDaddy.com has sold the premium domain name Futbol.com which is the word that most of the world outside of the US refers to as Soccer.

The domain name Futbol.com was one of the 200,000+ domain names that Godaddy bought from Marchex or $28.1 Million in April of this year.

I broke the news on TheDomains that GoDaddy sold Beijing.com in May, shortly after they acquired the Marchex portfolio in what was very likely a 7 figure transaction. The Beijing.com sale even had some chatter (in the comment section) to be around $6-$7 Million but that is unconfirmed.

Therefore, although we are speculating,  Futbol.com may be the second highest priced domain sold out of the old Marchex portfolio to date.

Futbol.com went into whois privacy on July 23, 2015, so the buyers are currently unknown. The domain is resolving with a Futbol logo on it and a stat counter currently.

I reached out to Paul Nicks from GoDaddy who confirmed the sale of Futbol.com but declined providing the sales price.

There is a new gTLD .Futbol which is owned by Rightside.

Currently, .Futbol  has over 4,600 domain names registered and the domain name Play.Futbol for example is priced at $60K per year.

Last week we pointed out that Land.com was sold in what we know is a seven figure transaction which is another .Com that has a matching gTLD.

You can read more from the IcannWiki page about .Futbol and get the latest stats on .Futbol here from NTLDstats.com

    Let’s put it right 🙂
“Futbol” is Spanish and Portuguese/Brazilian for “football”, which only in the US is called “soccer”.

The term “soccer” originated in England and was exported to the USA and Canada. It did not originate in the New World.

I never said it originated in the New World … read before commenting.
It was exported to all main Anglo-Saxon countries actually, like other things.

Futbol is, “football,” in several languages: Azerbaijani, Croatian, Bosnian, Uzbek, Turkish, and more, but the western spelling for the word, “football, in Portugese, is: futebol, according to Google search:

Yes, it’s Futebol in Portuguese/Brazilian, my typo, sorry 🙂
Louise, as regards “Futbol”, Spanish speaking people are more than 400 mln, which means the vast majority of those using “Futbol” out of the total. I know there are other countries where “Futbol” means “Football”, but they are a minority part, and their languages are not widespread as Spanish.

      No, thats not right.

Futbol is only associated to spanish because in portuguese it is called Futebol 😉

Most say football. Some say futbol. Americans say soccer. I think that is the correct order.

Not just an important sale for GoDaddy … or football / futbol / soccer … or .COM … or “category killers”.

It’s also important for the Spanish domain market as a whole – a reminder that English and Chinese-focused markets do not divide the world between them.
