Register.com Becomes The 2nd Top 10 Registrar To Join Afternic’s Domain Listing Service

April 6, 2010 by Michael Berkens

NameMedia’s announced today that Register.com, has joined the AfternicDLS (Domain Listing Service), as a premium promotion partner.

The AfternicDLS Premium Promotion Service is Afternic’s most expansive distribution network.  The Domain Listing Service will list exact matches of owned domains and suggestions of other owned domains when someone seeks to register a domain at one of the partner registrars.

According to the CEO of NameMedia Kelly Conlin, “Through its global distribution network, AfternicDLS now receives more than 35 million requests each month by consumers looking for a domain name, making it the most productive platform for connecting domain sellers with domain buyers.”

Network Solutions was already included in the program, making Register.com the 2nd of the top 10 registrars to join the Domain Listing Service as a premium promotion partner.  Additionally, listed names are available on more than a dozen other sites.

As a domainer to participate in the program,  your domains have to be registered at one of the partners and have to have a fixed sales price (make offer domains are not accepted).

If you become a member of Afternic DLS premium program, both Netsol and Register.com are offering special registration prices of under $10 per domain.

Domainers are charged Afternic’s standard 20% commission on the sales of any domain through the Domain Listing Service.

According to Afternic, Premium Promotion Sales have received an Average Sales Price of $1,600, which is 33% higher than the “Expanded Promotion Level” and 78% higher than the Basic Promotion Level.

Almost all my domains are at GoDaddy and I am part of that program with all my domains set to “Make Offer”.

In order to have your name listed on ‘Premium Promotion’, the name must be priced. Through our research, we’ve found that names that are priced have a 10X higher sales velocity than names that are unpriced.

If you want to list names on Afternic, but want to have them set-up as “Make Offer”, you can still do that by selecting one of the two other promotional levels – ‘Expanded Promotion’ or ‘Basic Promotion’. The difference is that the distribution of the names is not as wide as Premium Promotion.

If the prices are fixed, how often do the buyers contact BuyDomains and ask for a better price? Or, someone to walk them through the purchase process.

And, if they contact BuyDomains to inquire about the domain or to question the price, how often does BuyDomains offer them an alternative which is owned by BuyDomains?

Currently, names listed on the AfternicDLS platform sell at list price approximately 40% of the time. The domain owner has the tools to set the list price, as well as the floor price. Therefore, prices should always be in a range where the domain seller is comfortable. Once the prices are set, the sales team (if contacted) negotiates on behalf of the seller. Keep in mind that the sales team is a seller’s agent in this situation, so they are compensated based on dollars sold. Therefore, it is in their best interest to sell the name at the highest list price.

With regards to offering other names, the sales team at BuyDomains is compensated on sales. Meaning, they receive the exact same commission rate regardless of who owns the name. Our objective is to help the individual looking for the name first and foremost.
