Universal Goes With Despicable.me Instead of Despicableme.com

August 9, 2009 by Michael Berkens

To promote its new animated film, “Despicable Me“, Universal studios,  chose to use the domain, Despicable.Me instead of Despicableme.Com.

This is the first time I have seen a .ME domain used as the promotion tool of a major feature film.

Before you think that Universal was “forced into” using the .ME because it failed to secure the .Com version, think again.

Universal didn’t make that mistake,  as it secured the domain Despicableme.com as well, and is  forwarding it to Despicable.me.

The film, staring the voice of Steve Carell, doesn’t open up until next year, on July 09, 2010, but the trailer is already in the theaters.

Click here to watch the trailer for the movie, which looks likes its going to be very funny by the way, and the use of the .ME domain displayed at the end.

It’s certainly interesting to see a media company choosing a .ME over a .Com and with the movie a year out, we’re going to be seeing the domain for a long time.

    Great news for .me investors.

Now lets cross our fingers and hope that universal release one movie a month with the word “me” in it.

    I can see it happening.

They also registered DispicableMe.com and Dispicable.Me, showing good awareness of the typo traffic issue as well. Looking forward to the movie.
