I remember the end of 2024 into the start of 2025 there were more than just a couple people pontificating that .ai was a fad that was getting ready to fade. Well it’s not.

In 2025 .ai only needed 9 months to almost surpass 2023 and 2024 combined in total dollars. For the years 2023 and 2024 .ai did $18.3M in total dollars. In 2025 .ai has already done $17.4M.

Identity Digital wrote in June of this year:

In 2025 alone, .ai domain registrations have increased by more than 60% year-over-year, with renewals doubling compared to the previous year. This growth has been driven not only by rising interest from AI startups, research institutions, and tech innovators, but also by Identity Digital’s platform, which has expanded global availability, improved performance, and made it easier than ever to register and manage .ai domains.

  1. xAI – Valued at around $80 billion after merging with X (formerly Twitter), with plans to reach up to $200 billion in future rounds. Elon Musk’s AGI‑focused venture, powering the Grok chatbot, is now integrated into Tesla cars.

  7. 01.ai – Founded by Kai‑Fu Lee, achieved unicorn status with over $1 billion valuation within eight months of founding
  8. Cognition.ai – Developer of AI agents; raised $175 million at a $2 billion valuation in early 2024, later reaching $4 billion by March 2025
  9. Moonshot.ai – Chinese LLM startup; valued at $3.3 billion after a $1 billion+ funding round in early 2024
  10. Thinking Machines Lab (thinkingmachines.ai) – Founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, this startup raised a $2 billion seed at a $12 billion valuation in July 2025, focusing on next-gen multimodal AI systems.

So let’s look at those 15 Unicorns, Runway redirects the .ai to RunwayML.com. Hippocratic.ai redirects to HippocraticAi.com. Claude and Perplexity own their .com to go along with the .ai. Stability.com is parked with a $2.5M ask. Cisco owns Jasper.com.

All in all, .AI is a fantastic extension and has exploded in popularity. Values continue to surge, as does demand, but remember—outside of tech and crypto circles, many people still don’t fully recognize it yet. In comparison to many other extensions, .AI is still a quite small ccTLD but it is experiencing explosive growth.

If I were running a company on a .AI, I’d also secure the matching .com.
