GoDaddy acquiring Uniregistry and Name Administration

February 11, 2020 by Raymond Hackney

GoDaddy buys Uniregistry

The first blockbuster deal of the decade. Something that someone predicted to me who had no knowledge over the holiday season. I was having a conversation day after Christmas and someone said to me, “I bet you GoDaddy buys Uniregistry” I said why, they thought with Schilling not as high profile anymore that he would sell out.

GoDaddy stock currently 69.89 USD +0.47 (0.68%) GoDaddy is not acquiring the “registry” business.

Competition continues to get smaller and smaller.

Full release

GoDaddy Inc. (NYSE: GDDY), the company that empowers everyday entrepreneurs, today announced it is acquiring Uniregistry’s leading domain registrar and marketplace businesses. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close sometime in Q2 2020. The Uniregistry domain registry is not part of the transaction.

Uniregistry started in 2014 by catering to domain name investors with specialized tools to register, manage and sell domains. They later expanded its service to other audiences while still focusing on domain name investors.

“Uniregistry is unique in that domain investors built it from the ground up so their products and services have always catered to the domain investor community,” said GoDaddy Vice President Paul Nicks. “This acquisition reinforces GoDaddy’s commitment to domain investors. Combining Uniregistry’s solutions and incredible knowledge with our platform will help investors succeed and advance future innovations for them. We can’t wait to get started.”

“One of the mantra’s we repeat around the Uniregistry office is that we dream about building a company of permanence and value. When I started speaking with GoDaddy, it became clear how passionate we both are about our customers and this industry. I realized the best way to fulfill our mantras and dreams was to join with Godaddy,” said Uni Founder and CEO, Frank Schilling. “I’m so proud of the team we’ve put together.  It is incredibly rewarding to give them the opportunity to scale our solutions with GoDaddy’s customers.  The years ahead will truly be awesome!”

The Uniregistry registrar will continue to operate at www.uniregistry.com.

In addition to the registrar and marketplace, GoDaddy is also acquiring Uniregistry’s domain portfolio of more than 350,000 names.

“Frank is one of the smartest and savviest investors, and his portfolio shows that knowledge and acumen. We can’t wait to bring these to market for our customers with competitive prices,” Nicks continued.

To better support enterprise-level customers, GoDaddy is acquiring Brandsight in the transaction. You can find more information at www.brandsight.com.

You would have to be blind to not see that one:

    Escrow.com should be next.

Uniregistry was the last real competitor for GoDaddy. Epik, Dan, Efty, Huge Domains are not big enough to take on GoDaddy and never will be.

Here it says (https://hostingchecker.com/research/the-most-crowded-ipv4-addresses-on-the-internet/) that they have more than 1,370k domains pointing to the IP of Uni. I am wondering if those 1 million of the other domains are clients that stay with Uni or go to GoDaddy. Or what will happen with the management system. It is unclear from the pressrelease.

Escrow.com at some point IMO. They would complete the puzzle.

yes, that would be a natural get.escrow.com

I spoke with some GD folks today, and they’re excited about the Uni acquire

hell, namebio.com would be a decent acquire…to integrate with data analytics

          Maybe Namebio, maybe not.

If I know anything about Frank, he is a great negotiator. You negotiate with him on his terms 🙂 I’m sure he got a great deal. Good for him. So has he given up on servicing fellow domainers? wasn’t it profitable enough for him? Or is he simply going back to concentrating on his core business of being a domainer.

Don’t wait for much of the benefits accruing from this acquisition to flow over to GoDaddy customers. They move slower than century old molasses in getting around to fixing even simple stuff with their own Control Panel. Have GoDaddy now gone/going into the business of using tax-havens?

how long before they buy escrow.com

Why do they have to buy escrow.com ?

They will control more and more of the narrative, scooping up quality names, rars etc makes sense, escrow.com does not.

Why not start buying domain forums too and blogs and keychains!

Finnaly Frank sold his portfolio. And just at the perfect timing. Well done 👌
