The travel scam ?

June 2, 2017 by Raymond Hackney

Would you travel to another country to close a $50K deal ?

There is an interesting thread on Namepros where a member posted about a potential buyer wanting him to travel to another country to close the deal.

Hell guys
A strange request from a potential buyer for one of my domain names.
He want me to travel to his country to complete the deal face to face.
I have asked him to use Escrow services but he replied that he is not comfortable with it.
What is your feedback guys?
Thanks for all.

The thread starter goes on to say that the prospect turned down using escrow, meeting with a broker in person or any other alternative solution.

The lead came from eBay, and the seller has no real way to verify the buyer. The buyer is located in Los Angeles.

Needless to say most have replied, no,no,no or scam alert. One member wondered what the scam would be ? Fly to the U.S. and I recommend you use this travel agent for booking the trip. All the while the buyer owns the travel agent.

If it’s a scam it certainly could be more nefarious than just earning a commission.

So would you travel to another country to close a $50K sale ?

P.S. The seller has said they have no intentions of going, no rush to sell and have had similar offers.

Yes, I would travel to another country to close a $50k domain sale, with a non-refundable deposit. plus meet in the lobby of the Police Station, or American Consulate 🙂

    NO!
I’ve seen taken and my dad has a very particular set of skills, skills acquired over a very long career … but they are mostly woodworking related 🙁

That’s not a scam its a Blind Date with a Serial Killer in Los Angeles! Hahahahahahahahahahahhaha! This reminds me the movie Massacre in Texas, where even the “Police Sheriff” is taking people to the cannibals house to have fresh meet for dinner!

I wont travel to any country for a stupid 50K deal, we are in the digital business, not need face to face deals, screw the real life business, people are weird, dumb and very complicated to deal with. God bless Internet and Domaining!

I don’t even trust my stupid extravagant neighbors, their dogs and their noisy peacocks! Its like living next to the PlayBoy mansion but without the mega hot girls!! But Iam willing to travel to the PlayBoy mansion to close a $ 1 USD domain sale with the playboy hotties! 😀

Why not, some people dont trust internet with there live savings. how can he rob you? cant steal the domain
since its virtual. if he wants to buy can go to his/her bank and let them talk with my bank about bank guarantee
if he want me to come he better pay my flight!

Buyer pays travel expenses, including accommodation and meals upfront and on top of the $50k

Meet up in a public place recommended

    Then perhaps.

”No need to travel for a domain deal, that’s the big advantage of domaining. So let’s settle the deal via SEDO (100 % safe) or forget it.”

if it is to make the deal in Nigeria or Ivory Coast, then do it by all means

Sounds like he is a serial killer…don’t do it!
If you do, get him pay all upfront fees on flights, accommodation, security bodyguards and food….and pay 50% or $25000 upfront on domain name

If the buyer lacks the requisite sophistication to recognize both the value and relative safety of an escrow service, then they probably also lack said $50,000. Bottom line, the seller should be very wary.

In our crazy world of terrorism and kidnapping? Be smart and stay in your own country. No need for face to face meeting.

In the 80s two of my friends who were starting a commodity fund had a face to face with the president of a small African country at the time a million dollars was a lot of money.they basically turned the leaders money down when the found out the penalty if they lost his money

Doesn’t Richard Lau have a story about flying to another country to do a domain deal and receiving a briefcase full of cash?

Based on what was posted above there’s no reason whatsoever to “go to anyone to complete a sale”. Especially when in the scheme of things $50k isn’t much. There are a number of trusted and proven ways to get a deal done electronically unless you’re dealing with someone or a country that’s been flagged and can’t use those channels.

Automatic alarm bells should be going off in your head … better to walk away from possible problems than taking on high risks when there are plenty of ways to work around a payment problem that would be safe for both parties. Most sane humans have builtin “preservation modes” gut feeling something isn’t right. Go with that and if the buy really wants the domain they’ll find a way to pay you in a way you feel safe. just mho ….
