Peter Thiel, co-founder of Paypal has is diving into the world of legalized marijuana, through his Founders Fund he has made an investment in Privateer Holdings who is the first private equity firm to invest solely in the legal cannabis niche. In the domain world 2014 saw many domain investors getting into the niche of marijuana related domains. Over the last 30 days 1782 marijuana .com domains have been registered.

Founders Fund announced Thursday that it has made a multi-million-dollar investment in Privateer Holdings, the world’s first private equity firm investing exclusively in the legal cannabis market. Founders Fund is backed by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal. Founders Fund has more than $2 billion in assets under management.

Seattle-based Privateer owns Leafly, a Yelp-like app and website service that works much like a marijuana search engine to connect medical and recreational users with legal suppliers, along with strain reviews. Privateer in November announced an agreement with the family of reggae star Bob Marley to launch what it said was the first global cannabis brand, Marley Natural, with trademarked heirloom marijuana strains and products. It also owns Tilray, a Canada-based medical marijuana company.

    The one area Peter should be also looking at is a “bank” for all those who can’t even make a deposit… I am sure that is next.

    I am very active in the cannabis name space and thought it was very strange to see MarijuanaSalve.com in your list above… that name is ‘A Grade’ and its unbelievable that anyone would knowingly let that name expire at this point (maybe a year ago like when cannabissalve.com showed up in the drops, but not now).

    MarijuanaSalve.com seems to have been registered in 2012 and was renewed in the last 30 days; your article gave me the impression that you were referencing new registrations and not renewals… I did give it a re-read and can see how your language can be interpreted to mean both new registrations as well as renewals… Can you clarify if any attempt was made to differentiate renewals from new registrations/transfers?
