What’s Going On With The Huge Increase in Domains Regs In The Color New gTLD’s .Red; .Pink; .Blue?

December 31, 2014 by Michael Berkens

There has been a sudden and huge boost in domain registrations for all the color new gTLD’s extensions in the past few days, .Red, .Blue, .Pink each increasing around 25% from its previous totals

Each new domain extension that are operated by Afilias, have added thousands of registrations in last the 2-3 days.

.Blue has added over 2,000 registrations in the last 2 days going from less than 7,000 registrations to just under 9,000.

.Red has added over 2,000 registrations going from under 18,000 to over 20,000 registrations.

.Pink added a little over 2K registrations as well going from 9,100 to over 11,2o0

It seems that almost all the domain names have been registered at GMO’s Onamae.com, which accounts for somewhere between 50%-70%  of all the registrations for these new gTLD’s.

By the way for the .XYZ haters, the price of a .Pink domain registration advertised on the front page of Onamae.com is half the price of a .XYZ registration.

The domains being registered are awfully strange considering that in a world of only 10,000 domains registration there are plenty of great one word, numbered, three letter domains available and domains are being registered with hyphens even two hyphens  and most of them seem nonsense.

Here is an example of just the domain names registered yesterday in .Pink all starting with the letter “A”:

I don’t think a person can accurately compare domain registrations between the new tld’s right now because If you check at Namestat, there are numerous examples of nonsense registrations. Even with .realtor, there are obvious robot reg’s mixed in with legitimate registrations.

Better check you blog comments when someone reported:
“The only reason “Onamae” and “Xin Net Technology Corporation” are doing good at selling this .xyz crap is because Onamae sells .xyz domains for $1.67 a pop, and Xinnet is selling them for $1.91 USD a pop.”

One word – SPAM. I have been getting tons of spam from .click, .link, and .rocks, all from weird domains that no sensible human would register.

These new gtlds are going to be a huge source of spam problems, especially for the gtlds that are priced cheaply. Registries are going to have to step up and come up with solutions for this deluge of spam that is going to be hitting the web.

    @George
This is not only spam, but also PPC click fraud and whatever else you can think of.
Not only these New gTLDs will have this problems but also the few legitimate users will be punished as whole NEw gTLDs will be marked at spam.

Michael-interesting re .Pink etc but have you noticed who’s been buying the .MOE ? Happy New Year to all.

Michael-I hope you’ll do future writings as you did back in May about people like Mr Schwarz -yourself or others that really know what they’re doing as to buying new extensions. I recently read a post of Frank Shilling and he said that (para phrase) that’s it’s probably inevitable re the new .co .moe .cc or whatever will come into their own-as these real pros start )already have Im sure) to buy the “category killers” in these new extensions it would be very interesting to not only see the names but their different views on them.
