According to a mailing from the offical site of the .NYC new gTLD domain name extension, mydotnyc.com the city expects that the .NYC extension will go live in the 1st half of 2014.

“The City of New York will be one of the first cities in the world to be granted its own domain extension by ICANN, the nonprofit organization responsible for overseeing the domain names.

“Approval of .nyc comes as ICANN expands the number of generic top-level domains beyond such extensions as .com, .org and .edu, that currently exist.”

“Since the City’s application for .nyc has been approved by ICANN. We are now in the implementation phase which includes contracting with ICANN, activation of .nyc in the global Internet infrastructure , and then testing.”

“Based on the current status we now expect .nyc to go live in the first half of 2014.”

“.nyc launch activities are likely to begin between April and June 2014.”

According to the site, New York City businesses and organizations with a NYC address, individuals with a primary residence in NYC, as well as those offering products or services to New Yorkers can register a .nyc domain name.

Trademark holders with a NYC address, will be given priority during the application process in order to secure their intellectual property.

What about .LA? Or will that be .losangeles (little long-winded, that)?

.La which is the country code ccTLD for Laos has been out for many years although recently rebranded to mean .Losangeles by the registry.

However unlike .nyc, .boston., miami, .paris to name a few .LA does not have the backing of the city and is not being used by the city in its own websites as other cities will do.

The city of Los Angeles did not apply for its own new gTLD in the 1st round
